By Newsbreak Producer Genevieve Lanka - Struggle icon Swaminathan "Swami" Karuppa Gounden - will be laid to rest in a private funeral in Durban today. Gounden passed away in the early hours of Monday morning at the age of 94, after being unwell for a few weeks. Gounden spent most of his life as an activist, first in the liberation movement and thereafter in civil society. He was bestowed with the Order of Luthuli in Silver by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2018. While calls have been made for an official send off for Gounden, spokesperson for the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal Nhlakanipho Ntombela says there wasn't enough time for planning. He hovever says the party will be hosting an official memorial in due course...

UPDATE: It has emerged that struggle icon Swaminathan Karuppa Gounden WILL BE accorded a special official funeral. KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala confirmed to be delivering a virtual eulogy.
