By Newsbreak Producer Matthew Veeran - Experts from the University of Pretoria veterinary team have pulled off another South African first, performing a remarkable beak transplant on a vulture. Led by Professor Katja Koeppel, the team worked around the clock to repair the beak of the an endangered African white-backed vulture, after it was crushed when it was hit by a car in March. At first they attempted to fit the bird with prosthetic acrylic beaks and wires, but due to instability and feeding issues, they decided to take a peck at a more out of the box idea.
