By Newsbreak Producer Matthew Veeran - The stage is set here in Durban as the 26th edition of the Time of the Writer Festival gets underway today. Hosted by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), the long-standing event features a diverse line-up of writers, poets, novelists and playwrights - with Dr Sindiwe Magona selected as the Featured Author. This year's edition has also invited submissions of short stories from unpublished writers, culminating in an anthology mentorship programme. The festival runs from the 16th to the 21st of March. Curator Sibahle Khwela says the programme will include both live & online events...

Held under the theme "Bridges of Solidarity", the festival brings together 40 cultural producers who will develop strategies that advance shared values. With two days to go until the festival's close, a number of events and performances await local and international audiences. Director of the Centre for Creative Arts at UKZN, Ismail Mahomed previews both tonight's and tomorrow night's highlights...

Worldwide, there has been thousands of students detained and arrested for demonstrating against the harsh stance of Israel in their war with Palestine. Meanwhile, Professor at the University of Johannesburg - Salim Valley says the reaction from western leaders is unacceptable, comparing their approach as similar to their support for the South African apartheid government before 1994...
