E. coli levels at some Umhlanga beaches north of Durban remain at critical levels based on recent water samples taken by environmental NGO Adopt-a-River. An overflowing pump station at Blackburn next to the Ohlanga River, is considered to be a major contributor to the poor water quality at the beaches. Adopt-a-River director Janet Simpkins - says their regular independent water quality tests have shown that steady streams of raw sewage flowing from flood-damaged infrastructure, rain and load-shedding are factors that influence the E-coli levels in rivers and at beaches.
