By Newsbreak Producer Genevieve Lanka - The brutal gang rape of eight women allegedly by illegal miners in Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg has once again brought into focus the safety of women in South Africa. The eight women were part of a production crew filming a music video near a mine dump when they were attacked by more than eighty illegal miners. They women were repeatedly raped by several suspects before being robbed of their possessions. Chairperson of the Advice Desk for the Abused and gender activist, Dr Lubna Nadvi, says the incident calls into question the country's ability to address and curb gender-based violence. Nadvi has also criticised the narrative around the incident - particularly with regards to comments that shift blame onto the victims...
