In its monthly report, the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group found that the basket which consists of 44 basic foods - such as rice, maize, oil and beans - now costs R4,917,42. This is a R64 jump from December 2022. It is also much higher than the maximum of R3 895,92 a person earning minimum wage could take home. Program Co-ordinator at the Group, Mervyn Abrahams says what is also of grave concern is the Child Support Grant of R480 - significantly less that the R853 average cost to feed a child a basic nutritious diet...
