By Newsbreak Producer Tashlan Naidoo - Calls are being made for greater investment into the literacy sector as statistics show a decline in reading for meaning among pupils, especially in grade four. The "Progress in International Reading Literacy Study" revealed that SA ranked last out of 57 countries assessed from 2021 data. The study tested the reading ability of 400,000 students globally and showed that illiteracy among South African children rose from 78% in 2016 to 81%.
