By Newsbreak Producer, Taliesha Naidoo - The re-opened inquest into the death of Dr Hoosen Mia Haffejee is underway at the High Court in Pietermaritzburg. Haffejee died in August 1977 while in the custody at the Brighton Beach Police Station. This after he was arrested by members of the Special Branch of the South African Police Service on allegations of plotting to overthrow the state. It was alleged that Haffejee used his trousers to hang himself. Inquest proceedings in 1978 found that Haffejee had committed suicide. In 2018, former Justice Minister Michael Masutha approved the reopening of the inquest into Haffejee's death following representation to the National Director of Public Prosecutions by the Haffejee family.
