The 'Flood Hub' offers forecasts up to 7 days in advance, benefitting a population of 460 million people globally. Since adding 8 more African nations this week, its Ai-enabled platform now services 80 different countries including Brazil, South Africa, India and Thailand.  The hub is aimed to equip governments, aid organisations and individuals with advanced flood forecasting tools in order for them to take proactive measures.  Communications and Public Affairs Manager at Google South Africa, Siya Madikane says its data is collected from several publicly available sources to generate its forecasts...

Mariannridge was established in 1976 as a coloured township to relocate coloured families living around Durban. This was part of the implementation of the apartheid group areas act. By Newsbreak Producer Taresh Harreeparshad - Plans to mark the one hundred- and thirty-year celebrations of the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) was unveiled at the Sastri College in Durban yesterday. These include a book programme, documenting the formation of the liberation movement and even institutionalizing the legacy of the formation through an academic institution. These events will build up to the main celebration in August, which marks the formation period of the NIC. Established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1894 - the organization played an integral role in the dismantling of apartheid. The NIC was home to unforgettable stalwarts of the liberation struggle - from Dr. Monty Naicker to Farouk Meer. Spokesperson for the organising committee Ravi Pillay says recalling the legacy of the NIC gives him goosebumps...

By Newsbreak Producer Shanell Daniel - With well over 85-percent of the country's population ascribed to some form of religion, it is probable that it is the most influential sector and perhaps the most neglected in terms of recognising its influence when it comes to Gender-Based Violence. That's according to Daniela Genrich, co-ordinator of 'We Will Speak Out South Africa' and speaker at the South African Hindu Maha Saba's upcoming Inter-Faith Workshop on GBV. The workshop will be held at the Kendra Conference Room, in Durban, on May 11th, at 2pm. Genrich says historically some faith-based institutions have felt exempt from the realities of Gender-Based Violence, however she says a workshop like this one proves that GBV is being taken seriously by faith leadership...
