This after South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) have been on a long strike demanding pay parity with Ekurhuleni municipal workers. This has affected dirt and waste collection in the port city for over two weeks resulting in major stench and refuse pile up's all over the region. The strike has halted daily municipal operations, prompting various service delivery protests in the city.
