#PODCAST Amnesty International say rape & sexual abuse is driving SA's soaring childhood pregnancy figures

By Newsbreak Senior Producer Genevieve Lanka - Rape and sexual abuse is a driving factor behind the South Africa's soaring number of child pregnancies, and requires urgent intervention. This is according to Amnesty International South Africa's Research Consultant Cassandra Dorasamy. Statistics recently released by the organisation shows that more than 90-thousand girls between the ages of ten and nineteen gave birth between April 2021 and March this year. The numbers do not factor in variables such as termination of pregnancy, home births, miscarriages and babies whose births are not registered. Dorasamy says that cases of rape should automatically be registered for girls younger than twelve-years-old who give birth - as they are below the age of consent...
