When the world thinks of Los Angeles, what images comes up? Maybe Venice Beach? The Hollywood sign? Griffith Observatory? But all of this is too obvious for Rob Caves. He likes his L.A. off the beaten path. Caves is a model train builder and with a band of fellow enthusiasts he’s crafted a massive train set featuring scenes of L.A. you don’t often see in postcards but are deeply familiar to Angelenos. 

For several Saturday’s at the end of the year he lets the public into his home to see his masterpiece which spans rooms. LAist's Josie Huang talks to weekend editor Fiona Ng.
