Nobuko Miyamoto’s life-long quest to tell Asian American stories is chronicled in a documentary film premiering Saturday in Los Angeles at the VC Film Festival: Nobuko Miyamoto: A Song in Movement.

The film, directed by Quyên Nguyen-Le and Tadashi Nakamura, chronicles Miyamoto’s artistic journey as a third-generation Japanese American born in Los Angeles at the start of World War II to her mainstream success as a performer on Broadway and in films such as West Side Story.

The 2022-23 rainy season saved California from a brutal drought by delivering one of the wettest years on record. And it'd be great if we could keep the good times rolling with yet another major rain and snow year just like it this coming winter.

However, the odds of that happening aren't all that high, according to a recently published study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which says the event was about a 1 in 54-year occurrence. That means there was a roughly 2% chance of it happening in the current climate regime. It was so exceptional that the authors said that about 5% of observed sites saw a 1 in 320-year occurrence.

2023’s Wet Winter Saved California From Drought. Will We See Another Like It Anytime Soon?

Following a nearly two-year court battle, a company in the city of Vernon has reached a settlement with air quality regulators and agreed to stop rendering raw animal parts. 

As part of the agreement with the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD), Baker Commodities Inc. will pay the agency $400,000 and surrender its rendering permits within two weeks.  

In recent years, Baker’s facility on Bandini Boulevard next to the L.A. River converted animal remains collected from meat processing plants, grocery stores, and butcher shops into pet food and other household items.
