How hosting death salons in LA turned Emily Yacina’s grief into a new album

View descriptionShare

Emily Yacina’s new album Veilfall is out now. The singer-songwriter is best known for her and Alex G’s 2011 song Treehouse, which blew up on TikTok during the pandemic.

Ever since, Yacina has been primarily releasing music independently. Her newest album covers topics of grief and death, pulling from her experience hosting death-themed salons in Los Angeles, where she guided strangers through their own grief.

LAist’s Antonia Cereijido talked with Yacina about the inspirations behind her new album and why she stays independent.
