(00 - 9:05) Correspondent Kim Sawyer discusses the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) with Dr. Stephanie Hoops, United for ALICE National Director and United Way of Pennsylvania President Kristen Rotz. Reports show that roughly 55 million US families could not afford the basics in 2023, equating to over 40% of working families right here in Luzerne County. The group talks about how wages aren't keeping up with rising costs, the age disparity in hardships across the US and how different states see hardship. ALICE is working with area agencies to help make an impact - including right here in Luzerne County. Learn more at UnitedforALICE.org
(9:06 - 30) in 2019 the Mom-N-PA Free Dental Clinic broke records when it came to Wilkes-Barre, treating thousands of patients in a span of 48 hours. Now, the clinic returns to Mohegan Area at Casey Plaza again on June 6-7. Volunteers in Medicine Dental Services Manager Darcie Schaffer and Dr. Rich Grossman join the show to discuss their involvement in the clinic, how it works, and what it takes to put on such a huge event. The clinic opens its doors at 6am on June 6th. Clients are taken on a first-come, first serve basis, there is no pre-registration. It can do everything from x rays and dental cleanings to filings, root cancels and extractions. Mom-N-PA started in 2013, picking a location to travel to each year across the state. They have treated over 10,000 patients since its inception, and works entirely off volunteers and donated items. Currently the event is looking for volunteers to assist with event set-up, tear down and to assist attendees throughout the day, as well as area dentists, dental hygienists and more. Learn more about the event or how you can become a volunteer at mom-n-pa.com.
