Catching Up with Andy Napier

Published Jun 11, 2024, 4:51 PM

For years, Moody Radio listeners in the Tennessee Valley woke up to the voice of Andy Napier, Moody in the Morning. Andy and his wife Kathy joined Tom and Tabi to reminisce about good times and great moments at Moody Radio Chattanooga. They also shared an update on their current ministry with Trans World Radio and the importance of responding to God's call on your life.

In 1901, a woman by the name of Annie Taylor climbed into a barrel so that she could ride that barrel over Niagara Falls, the first person to do so. The reason for her crazy endeavor? She was struggling to make ends meet, and she was hoping for fame and financial security. Our mortgage team happens to be an arm of a bigger company who is a direct lender, which means our company gets to use its own money and make its own decisions within its own walls. There's no middleman. This advantage often allows us to get you a better rate, which can save you monthly and lifelong money through a refinance or help you with a cash out refinance, cashing out some of your home's equity to use for life. Andy Nape, you're here. Welcome to Moody in the morning. All right. At least that's what it used to be.

And we're going to have Moody in the morning on mornings with Tom and Toby, which is fueled in part by Raphael's Roastery, home of the new Tom and Toby coffee blend.

It begins with arabica coffee that's combined with caramel and vanilla. Flavors, and details are available at Raphael's Coffee.com.

Raphael's Coffee, located on Coffee Street in Coffee County, Tennessee. Have you tasted it yet, Andy?

No, but Coffee County, Tennessee is where my dad is from. Oh, really? Yeah. If I'm not mistaken, that's Tullahoma. Yeah.

Aha. So it's literally in your veins. It is, it is. Coffee is figuratively.

Absolutely. Well, Andy, thank you so much for just, uh, swinging by and saying hello. And and Toby and I talk about, uh, the legacy that we've experienced here at Moody Radio 50 years here in the Tennessee Valley. And we have the privilege of, like, standing on the shoulders of people who've come before us. And you are one of the people we stand on the shoulders of. So I'm so sorry I weigh more than you thought, but.

And that's why I've shrunk through the years. Just my wife, Kathy, is with me, and Kathy keeps saying, honey, I'm taller than you are now. I think you're shrinking.

Well.

Well, it's because of you all.

Absolutely. So we need to start eating salad more.

I'm thinking I was on a diet a while ago, so it should help.

Yeah, it should help just a little bit. So, Andy, just get us caught up on just. First of all, um, when did you start here at Moody Radio? And. And was this your first job out of college? Uh, tell us about that.

Um, not quite the first job out of college. I did, uh, some work here and there in radio, in the in the Chattanooga area and even some Christian concert promotion. But in 1989, which would have been three years after I graduated from Trevecca in Nashville, okay. Uh, 1989 is when I first started working, I did overnights, okay. Then I did evenings until, you know, 1 or 2:00 in the morning. Then I did afternoons. And I think for the last 12 or 13 years, uh, program director and morning host.

Okay. Yeah. So you ended it. Oh. Go ahead. Yeah.

Total of just short of 24 years with Moody 24 years.

And the highlight was when you trained me for those two summer months. Without a doubt. Yes. That was a highlight for me.

I don't think that that was the highlight. Um, coming in to join us in our conversation right now is Andy's wife, Kathy. Hi, Kathy. I think you you want to, like, change the narrative really quick?

I do, Tom, because this is where it all started for me and Andy. This is where we met.

Oh, that that might be the highlight. Yeah, maybe. Yeah, maybe it's a tie.

No.

So, Kathy, what did you do? What did you do? Did you use a lasso to rope them or tie them up? No.

A story is. It was a God thing. Totally a God thing. I just volunteer here during a share event a few months later, I get a note in the mail asking if I can start coming in and help keep Andy's desk clean. See?

She was oh during share, she was on the phone answering the phone and they placed her at my desk. Oh, and my desk has always been a disaster. It still.

Is.

Yeah, and she cleaned it up.

No, I did not. But that was the ruse they used.

Oh, the.

Ruse he had mentioned to the lady up front. When you send out the thank you's, can you make sure and include this particular girl?

So that is like the most creative pick up line I have ever heard. Andy. Wow. Pretty creative.

It was. It was out of character for me. But, uh, you know, I had had noticed and we, you know, talked. As I would, you know, go from the control room to my desk and back. And so I took her to lunch. Uh huh. And, uh, so he.

Did tell me he was taking a few people to lunch to thank them. But I show up, and I. You messed it.

Up. No, it was so smooth before.

Um.

Anyway, I know, right? I've never seen Andy blush before. This is really kind of fun to watch.

Yeah, and I will say, I had been listening to him for years.

Oh, so he was like a celebrity. He was.

He was. And I joke with him, I had one, a cassette tape back in those days. Okay.

I remember those days.

Yes. And I came to the door to pick it up and he just, like, hands it out, slams the door. So no no, no.

Yeah. Andy.

No that's not how I wanted. Yeah okay.

It was not I, I did not invite her in and give her a tour because I was the only one here. Okay. Oh. Onorable. Yeah, I was being onorable. So I handed it to her, thanked her for listening. But, you know, I didn't say, come on in, baby. Let me give you a tour. No, no.

He had done that. I would have walked straight to the car. She.

It worked. It did work. Absolutely it did. She is.

Not dead. It is alive and well. And Andy Napior, we're just getting to know him and Kathy.

Many of you remember Andy from years gone by. He was working here at, at W and b w. He worked here for 24 years. Right Andy.

And those were really good years. Honestly, I treasured every one of them. And especially the fact that I met Kathy here. Uh, we were in the conference room next door talking about how our boys would run all around the station. And, you know, we'd have parties and. Yeah, this is home. Yeah.

Oh, and it's good to have you back here in the hallways with us here, Andy. And, you know, there are a lot of people that are enjoying listening to you. Uh, they've missed you, and they've been just, like, writing some really nice notes to you.

Nancy Klein says hello to you, Andy. And Kathy. I have so many wonderful memories of your days at Wmw. Yeah.

Hey, Nancy, Sheila says, uh, so good to know that you and your family are doing well. God bless you and your continued work in him.

That's right. And and it's not that we, you know, left on bad terms. No. God just called us to TWA, Trans World Radio, and we both work there, uh, in the headquarters in Cary, North Carolina. And instead of just doing, you know, Christian radio work here in the US or in this case, you know, the greater Chattanooga area, God's called us and we're doing work around the world, still proclaiming the gospel through radio.

Amen.

So he brought you from the Tennessee Valley to the world. And, uh, Dale says, hello, Andy. Welcome back. We first met one year, uh, during shoes for Orphan Souls at the truck at the Barn nursery. And my favorite thing from your time at Wmw was the recording of the Christmas story by the employees children. God bless you and thanks for the memories.

I still have a bunch of people walk up and say, oh, we loved hearing the kids read the Christmas story.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

They still request.

It. Yeah, absolutely.

Yeah. We played we played this last Christmas. Yeah, we pulled it out because we had so many people say, please God, this thing. And there were the kids and all that stuff. And so we were able to find it. We played it this last Christmas. Well, good. Yeah, it's a highlight. And, uh, we have a friend who said we had the pleasure of meeting Andy and Cathy at Dallas Bay Baptist Church in Hixson a week ago. It was so good to meet them in person, hear stories about how the word is changing lives around the world.

Yeah, we had a great time at Dallas Bay. Uh, I think we spoke in six different Sunday schools. Am I right, sweetheart?

Yes, we did, and that was great.

Yeah. Just, uh, really good church family there. So and and great shout out to all the churches that support our work with our Dallas Bays, one of them.

So that's awesome. Way to.

Go guys.

Yeah Teresa is saying hello from Crossville to you, Andy. And Skeeter says I've always loved Andy's voice on the air.

Thank you very much, Skeeter. Yeah, he.

Doesn't like it much in person, but on the air it's fantastic.

That's why I've got the headphones on. So, you know, I can make sure and monitor and just say it exactly right. Otherwise. Hey.

How you doing?

Wouldn't work every morning.

Wouldn't work.

And then lastly, one of our friends is saying, so glad to hear that Andy and Cathy are there. I hear him some on footstep's around the world, but it's just not the same as listening to him for several hours in the morning. So it's so good to hear all both of y'all. Yeah all y'all again.

All y'all again and again. If you're just tuning in Andy Napier is our guest. And you heard him on the airwaves of Moody Radio for years here at 88.9 FM. And and Andy, when you're here, one of the things I love about you is your love for the word. And I'm just wondering if you have a word for us, or maybe a scripture that God is really revealing to you at this time in your life, in your relationship with him and where he has you right now, I.

Tell you one thing that I have been, uh. I guess this was a couple of weeks ago. I was reading through Titus, one of those books you can read through in one sitting.

46 verses.

Yeah. And. And in Titus. Two words kept jumping out at me. Actually four words. The first two sound doctrine. And then, especially when you get into parts of chapter two and chapter three, good works. But even before you get to good works, you keep reading about sound doctrine over and over again. I tell you what, we cannot stress enough why a station like, you know, Moody Radio Chattanooga or the Moody Network, or for that matter, RT around the world. Our role is so vital because we are providing sound doctrine. You know, it's one thing to just get out there and say, I'm a Christian. I want to just love everyone, you know, let's be happy. Let's drive around in a Volkswagen van with peace signs. Love. Yeah. Happy. God's good. No, we've got to have sound doctrine based on God's word.

Absolutely.

And that's what you get with Moody Radio every single day. Great Bible teaching. And it's going to help you not only in your personal life, but as you do ministry work because it's founded on God's Word. We've got to have that sound doctrine as we do the good works.

Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. For that reminder, Andy, not only do they get that here at Moody Radio, but they also get an RT for each and every day.

And it's important, especially when you're talking about places around the world, whether it's Africa where there's a lot of syncretism with voodoo mixed in, tribal beliefs mixed in, or you go to Latin America and the prosperity gospel is rampant, we've got to have that sound doctrine so that people are grounded in the word.

I know that, of course. That's our motto from the word to life. We want to apply the word accurately to our lives. Trans World Radio, doing that around the world. Tell us a little bit about that mission, and you're on with us with footsteps, of course, but you're taking radio to places that are hard to reach as well, right?

That's right. Whether from Guam, going into North Korea or, uh, in Central Asia, going into all the Stan countries, or you might be talking about, let's say, Russia or right now, the ministry in Ukraine, God is using us in over 200 languages, reaching people in 190 countries, going into people's homes where missionaries likely will never be able to go. So, uh, God. And a lot of times we do this in partnership with Moody Radio, especially the program Bold Steps, which were airing in certain parts of the world. Together we are proclaiming the gospel, you know, here, as in acts one eight, it talks about Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and then to the ends of the earth or the uttermost. So, you know, you've got moody radio here and not just this region and across four states, but now with the partnership with RT, we're talking about going to the ends of the world. So, uh, yeah. And we're and again, carrying sound Bible doctrine. Yes. And at RT, our calling is to reach the world for Christ by mass media so that lasting fruit is produced. The idea it's not just someone raises their hand and say, I'm a Christian. I'm in. I prayed a short prayer. No, it's making disciples. It's people that are growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord that are abiding in Christ, and they are bearing fruit.

Well, thank you so much for that, and we are proud of you and Cathy for your work there and for your legacy here. Uh, just a quick few couple more. Tim says, um, just as we love Tom and Toby, we have always loved Andy with Moody in the morning, talked about Christmas again and, uh, your, your your boys saying do not be afraid. Yeah. God's God's richest blessings to you and family and another friend. Good to hear you and Cathy this morning. Miss our days at Wmw.

Yeah, well, this is our home. Uh, we miss you guys. But when God calls, you follow him. Absolutely. And, uh, and he blesses. So, uh, we're we're thankful to still be serving God in another Christian ministry, but one that, you know, hand in hand with moody Twitter. Uh, it's it's a it's a great time to serve the Lord, because, you know what? Uh, our world is dark, but we can spread light into it, can't we?
