Matt Potter, Co-Founder & Head of Strategic Partnerships, at Pray.com, joins Kelli and Steve to discuss the power of prayer and the impact of digital apps to bring us closer to God.

They're helping you take that next step in your journey with Jesus. It's mornings with Kelly and Steve.

Hey, listen, uh, you may hear the prayer changes things, but how do we know? Well, three new studies have scientifically confirmed a link between regular use of a digital prayer app and improvements in stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep among its participants. And that's according to new research, which was sponsored by pray. Com Matt Potter is one of the founders of Pray.com, and he's joining us this morning by phone. And this is interesting research. Matt, good morning. Welcome to the program.

Good morning and honored and blessed to be here. Hey, glad.

To have you along with us this morning. Uh, bring us up to date a little bit on this research because, you know, there is with our, our culture and everything going on in the world, you're finding, especially when you you hop on social media, it seems like there are an awful lot of people who do have stress, anxiety, depression and sleep issues. Uh, what did you find in this research?

You know, we found that when people pray and when they're reminded to pray through, uh, a digital therapeutic like pray.com that, you know, their stress, anxiety and depression kind of melt away, and it and it, uh, decreases those levels, uh, every day when you're reminded to pray and connect with your creator, uh, through a digital therapeutic like pray.com. So it's been incredible to see the science of prayer, which is kind of counterintuitive, right? Um, you know, mainstream media wants to separate science and prayer. And, um, you know what? It's actually science was invented by God, and the rules of the universe were created by God. And wouldn't you know that connecting with your creator affects your physical body and your mental health?

Isn't that something that you know? We work so hard to separate faith and science, but yet our faith informs our science, and science proves faith. And that whole circular relationship between the two. But so many people forget that what God has given us is skills, gifts and talents. And and we use and apply our knowledge. And so, yes, science very much in fact, is from God. And we are on a, I think, a period of history where we are finding out so much through good research how our faith affects our mental health, our physical wellness, all of those things. Um, tell us a little bit about this partnership. Uh, you know, and the research that you guys have done with regard to finding this information out.

Yeah. We've done three clinical trials with major universities like Arizona State, Biola, um, Harvard, uh, flourishing project and, and several more. And those clinical trials have just proven, uh, you know, that people stress, anxiety and depression, uh, continue to decrease as they pray more and as they connect with, uh, their Lord and Savior more, uh, you know, we're created in God's image. And so, um, you know, when we pray and we connect with God and we have that personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, our mental and spiritual health increase over time, and that anxiety and depression and stress decrease over time. Um.

Yeah.

I'm reading here. Um, what what we were sent that study participants who reported improvements in overall mental health and stress were more likely to be moderate or high frequency users as compared to low frequency users. And that makes so much sense, because if you're looking for comfort and peace, you're going to spend more time in God's Word as opposed to not opening up that Bible at all. So that makes sense as how to as to how it correlates to prayer. Also, if you're stressed out, the more you pray, the more you're going to pause and really get that anxiety more under control. That just makes sense.

Absolutely.

And the average user on Pray.com uses the app around 77 times per month, uh, for a little bit over six hours of content consumption per month. And, uh, it's not just the Bible we have. We have the Bible inside the app, but we have, uh, this incredible content library of, uh, Bible based content that reminds you to pray but also helps you connect better with the Bible and the stories of the Bible, uh, that we all love to hear. And we've said it to some incredible music with different voice actors and actresses that are award winning. Uh, we hired a 61 piece orchestra. Uh, so it's it's really been incredible to see. And you can see it in the reviews. We have reviews unlike any other app out there. People are writing in how they were going to commit suicide until someone, uh, sent them the Pray.com app and they reconnected with their Lord and Savior, or, uh, they began a prayer journey in their life and bringing prayer back to their life in a daily habit, a healthy daily habit that helps reduce their anxiety, depression, and stress.

Well, one of the things that I found interesting about that, uh, the study and the information that you guys have garnered from this is that, uh, African American respondents were more likely than white respondents to report improvement in overall mental health and physical health. And as it relates to stress, anxiety, depression. Tell us a little bit about that portion of the study and what you found.

Uh, you.

Know, we have a really high usage from African American users on the app. Um, we, uh, we have some incredible, uh, pastors, uh, from, uh, different denominations like Church of God in Christ. Uh, and so, uh, those respondents, uh, have written in and said through our study that it's affected them even more, and they've been using the app even more, which, uh, is a, uh, a set of data that has been very understudied, uh, in our space. And so our research team and, uh, partner universities were really excited to see, uh, that African American respondents were using the app in such a heavy way and reported such incredible results.

I'm looking at the app right now, and there it really is so much here. I've got it opened up and I'm sitting here even as we speak, downloading it on my phone. You kind of gave us a little bit of an overview as to what was there. Can you, uh, share with our listening family? Because I'm looking here and I'm exploring the app, as I said, um, you talked about, uh, some music and some, uh, dramatic presentations that were there. What else do you have on the app, Matt?

Yeah. Uh, yeah. Great question. So if you if you go to your app store, uh, the Apple App Store or Google Play Store or even your web browser, and you just type in Pray.com, um, uh, that's where you can access the app and the, and the content library. Uh, when you pull up the app every day, you're going to be presented with a daily prayer. Uh, we call it your daily. It's a it's an incredible devotional, uh, plus guided prayer set with an incredible background and music overlay. And then we track every single day, uh, your prayer habit. And you can share that with your family members. And. Friends. How many days in a row that you prayed. And so we'll remind you every single day to pray. And that's one of the features of the app. We've got some incredible, uh, uh, pieces of content in the app that help you fall asleep at night. We've got sleep somse, uh, as well as our Bible, bedtime stories, um, and then biblical sagas, which is from Genesis all the way to revelations. It's the entire story of the Bible. And it's not just someone reading Bible verses, but you can hear your favorite Bible stories come to life, uh, in cinematic audio. And we find that people listen to it in the very early mornings, as well as, uh, late at night to fall asleep.

Well, one of the the things that I took note of was in the podcast section of the app, you know, I mean, I'm finding names Al Mohler, Alistair Begg, Jack Graham, Yael Eckstein, uh, the Bible Recap program, which is one of my favorites, uh, for a daily devotional as long, uh, John Cooper like you have got sort of the all star lineup on the bench of content that you're able to bring forth that people are able to, uh, access because you aggregate so much content into this app, and that just adds to the value. Tell us a little bit about what you hope that the Pray.com app will actually do in the life of a person, and why you guys work so hard at getting all of this great content and putting it into this, this one single point of usage.

Yeah. You named off a lot of our partnerships. We have over 100 partnerships with different, uh, pastors and and leaders. Uh, and we we hope that the app reconnects people with their faith, reminds them to pray, reminds them to connect with their Lord and Savior every single day, and also that it enables them to share the gospel with people in such a easy and subtle way. Uh, you know, we we always recommend that you go to your local church. We recommend that you invite your family members and friends to your local church, but an easy way to connect with someone and share with them the gospel is, you know what? I was thinking about you and praying about you today. I just wanted to share this. It reminded me of you. And they can share that daily prayer or content series or sermon from a pastor. Um, that was making them think about their family member or friend. And it's just an easy dip your toe in the shallow end way of being able to share your faith with somebody else. Um, and then have that larger conversation of, hey, I'd like to invite you to my local church. Um, but yeah, we would hope that people would reconnect with their faith, be reminded to pray, and also share their faith with others.

Well, I'd.

Like to hear what I'm seeing, too, that you could. You've made it easy for friends and family to be able to find each other within the app, and you've got that sense of community as you're able to share what you've been doing through the app, and they can share likewise. And that that to me creates a situation where you're just able to talk about what you've been doing through the app, what you're praying about, what you're you're reading and, and doing. And, and I love that because that creates a greater opportunity to just share what God is doing in your life as a result.

Absolutely. And we reach about 4 million people a day who share the app. We've had over 142 million shares of the gospel by people outside the app on other platforms like text message or email or Facebook or Instagram. Um, just from that daily prayer, daily devotional and all of the incredible partnerships of content creators and pastors and and leaders inside of pray. Com.

Well, one of the things that are really cool about this is the team behind it, not only yourself and the others who, uh, were the founding partners of the app, but also those who you have brought in because they bring certain expertise. You know, you have the whole segment on sleep and, uh, the different products that you can utilize to get to rest, you know, sleep through the Bible in, in a year. Right. We've got unpacking the sermon on the Mount and many other things. And you've brought in leaders, uh, from folks like at the calm app, who I'm sure bring a ton of research and understanding of how we can use digital platforms to improve these areas of our life where we don't need to turn to, whether that be, uh, even a natural supplement like a melatonin or an over-the-counter, uh, sort of sleep aid or any even prescription drug that could help us fall asleep, there are natural ways that we can do that and train ourselves. And so what do you hope the future looks like? I mean, you guys have pulled in some very, very in, uh, you know, strong intellectual people that can build into this app. What's the future of pray? Com.

You know, thank you for saying that. We hire an incredible team. We've seen over 33,000 resumes to hire about, uh, 56 people at Pray.com, which are mission aligned and some of the smartest people in the world in their fields. Yeah. Uh, from, from, you know, Christians from other companies that are world class fortune 500 companies. Uh, and and you know what, the thing that we're most excited about is, um, international. So we're going to be going international in a big way, utilizing a lot of AI technology that we've built internally at Pray.com. We're going to be making the library of content and even all of our pastor's content available in many, many different languages in their own voice. So our expectation for the future is we're excited, uh, you know, that the app is growing rapidly in the United States, but we're also excited to start making huge improvements in Latin America, um, and in Spanish and Portuguese and some of these different languages, uh, around the world. And so that's that's what we're excited about.

That is so great.

There is so much great content on here, Matt. I'm just I'm honestly, as I'm, uh, listening to you answer Steve's question, I'm scrolling through and. I'm so taken by this. I can't wait to be done with my my air shift today so I can just sit here and scroll through it and listen to some of the podcasts. This is such good stuff. It's pray.com you guys. And I'm assuming that the app, uh, just I want you to explain to people when you download it, that's free.

Yeah, absolutely. So so we've got a lot of incredible free content, you know, over over a million pieces of free content in the app. Daily prayer, uh, the daily devotional. All of that is completely free. Uh, we do have a paid, uh, content library, premium content library that we created, uh, with different celebrities, voice actors and actresses. That 61 piece orchestra I talked about, um, and that is paid if you're listening right now and you go to pray.com/matt, you can get the entire paid content library for free for a year. You don't have to enter in a credit card. You don't have to do anything. You just connect your account with an email and you can get the entire app for free just for listening to the show today. And that's Pray.com forward slash. Matt, you can get the entire thing for free.

Oh, that is just incredible. And kind of you to be able to, uh, provide that for our listeners. I know that, uh, you know, we've got a pretty forward thinking audience, and I know that, uh, their their favorite platform, honestly, to communicate with Kelly and I is by text. And so I know they've got device in hand. And so I do want to encourage you right now, uh, to go over there to pray.com/matt and take advantage of that. And again, the content that you are, uh, going to have access to is just absolutely incredible. And, you know, Matt, I want to say that perhaps the most important thing that we can do as Christ followers is to be obedient. And you personally, having responded to what God put before you along with your co-founders, um, I have to say thank you for your obedience to the Lord to pursue the vision that he had already cast for you guys, and how you have brought this to impact the lives of many, many. I'm sure you know, millions of users who have downloaded, uh, this. How did this affect you and change your life? What were you doing before prayer? Uh pray.com.

Yeah.

Uh, great. Great question. And we've had over 16.5 million downloads of the Pray.com app, 100 million downloads of Pray.com podcasts in the last 13 months. Um, before Pray.com, I, uh, I actually I dropped out of college. I don't recommend it to anyone listening or their children that are listening. Uh, but I dropped out of college. I started a company in the real estate sector. After I got the incredible opportunity to meet Steve Jobs, I went all in on the App Store, and I built over 8000 apps in the App Store for all the major real estate companies in the United States. And, um, you know, the company was doing great. Everyone was happy, customers were happy, and I just felt like I lost my purpose. I felt like I was just optimizing for revenue every day, and I wanted to do something bigger, something that impacted the kingdom. And God was tugging on my heart. So I met with my pastor, and I asked him how I could help and give back to the church. And he had a couple great ideas. And, um, and I just was super nervous about it. And so I just, I prayed about it. And the next day I ran into Steve Gatina, my co-founder at Pray.com, and he said, Matt, I just became a Christian because a Navy Seal shared with me an audio sermon. And I want to help people just like me who, you know, are millennials, but they don't they don't know about this. Like he didn't know about it. He didn't know about pastors. He didn't know about, uh, the gospel. Uh, he, you know, he grew up to a single Jewish mom on welfare. And I just said, Steve, there, there's millions of people around the world, billions of people around the world that need to have the experience that you just experienced. Um, and so I stepped down as CEO of my company, and I linked up with Steve and our other two incredible co-founders, Mike Lynn and Ryan Beck, and we started Pray.com in October of 2016.

Just incredible.

It's exciting when you stop and think about how much, uh, the way people consume. Media has changed even just over the last ten years. And you look at where social media is going and how stressed out people are when they consume social media in general. And now here, God has given you this vision for Pray.com. And you look at the content that's available and the options that they have and that can turn things around, and you can come here and find. Answers that you're looking for spiritually, and something that will calm your spirit and give you peace. And this is just fantastic. Yeah.

Well, thank you so much.

Well, we greatly appreciate your time, Matt. And we want to encourage people to go to pray.com. Find out more. Also find it in the App Store. You're going to search on pray com app and you will find it there. I encourage you if you're an Apple user or a Google uh, you know user Android user, go to the store, get that, download that today. But take advantage of those tools that are in there and look for the content. Not only are you going to find the the prayer content, but also you will find other inspirational things like the podcasts as well as, uh, music links in there as well. And so we just want to encourage you and certainly, Matt, we want to say thank you once more, not only for your time this morning, but for, um, for really pursuing what God has laid out before you, but also our gratitude to that Navy Seal who shared that with your, uh, your co-founder. That's just an awesome story.

Absolutely, absolutely. And thank you guys so much. Thank you for having me on the show. And thank you for listening today.
