Live from the Shepherd Community Center studios of Moody Radio, Indiana. It's mornings with Kelly and Steve.
Well, as we get into our 7:00 hour, I just want to remind you of our 8:00. Karen Wingate going to be joining us to talk about a great devotional. How do we really take in God's creation? Well, we do that with our senses, and we're going to be specifically talking about our ears today in the 8:00. Kelly, it's going to be a really good time.
It is. It's going to be a great conversation you do not want to miss, but you don't want to miss this one either. We are so excited right now to welcome Dave Foust to the program. He is senior associate pastor at East 91st Street Christian Church, and he's here to talk about They're Not Too Old conference. And if you've ever felt like as you are getting older, that somehow you're just not feeling as useful as you used to be, well, don't buy into that because it's not true. Right, Dave?
That is right. Good morning, Kelly and Steve. So good to join you this morning. Thank you for having me.
Well, you know, I think that this is a really important topic, Dave, because so often folks who had thriving professional careers, maybe active lifestyles, even a passion for life, unfortunately kind of fall flat. They fall away during their later years and after sort of they, they go from their career or maybe just, uh, raising their families and, and they've moved through life. But then something happens that they just kind of fall off and start to feel, hey, where do I contribute? What's my purpose? How do I use what I have? Maybe I just need to dial it back a bit, but that is so far from the truth, isn't it?
Oh yeah, a lot of people dread getting older, and in our culture, people equate getting old with failing health and declining significance, and you feel like you're going to be just stuck on a shelf with nothing to contribute for some people, sadly, growing old even means losing hope. But really, I've found in the Bible that's just not true. God's people, as we get older, have a significant sense of purpose, and God can really use us in that season of our lives.
Absolutely. So, you know, if someone told you that I'm just really too old to have anything at all to offer and I you know, I've got to be honest, the older I get, uh, Dave, sometimes I kind of feel that way. I sit back and I. I take inventory and I think about what I've spent my life doing, where I am now and what what will I have to offer in the future? What what do you say to that person? How do you encourage them and and how can we encourage each other? Because we've got all this lifetime of experience and living. But now we're at a place where we're just not sure what to do with it. Careers are coming to an end. And now what?
Yeah, that's right. My wife and I, we have a granddaughter named Kayla. And one day we asked her, Kayla, do you think Nana and Papa are old? And she thought for a moment and she said, um, medium. Old.
Medium.
I don't know what old old is in her mind, but I'm 70. I'm 70 years old. My wife just turned 70 as well. We don't mind sharing that. But the thing that I'm saying is that, and I talk about this in my book, not too old, is that, um, as you get older, you naturally ask these questions. But a person who is wondering about the purpose of their life, I would say you need to read your Bible. Actually, I was driven to write this book by the realization that the Bible directly addresses many of the issues that we question. As we're getting older. We think about financial security and financial planning and financial management. The Bible addresses that our friends become more important to us. We deal with loss and grief. We deal with. Where do I fit in serving God? What about my spiritual gifts? How can I still use them? Where do I fit in in the church? Uh, God's word addresses that very directly, both in the Old and New Testaments. We think about mortality. We face the reality of our own death. Um, all of those things. The Bible is written to address those things, and often people just don't realize the scriptures actually address very head on the questions that we come to. I would say if you're over 50, you're in the zone. You're at least medium old in your 50s and beyond. And actually, the first chapter of my book is called You Need to Read This book even if You are young. Because as someone pointed out to me, they said, Dave, this isn't a book about aging. This is just a book about following Jesus and bearing fruit for him as long as you live. That's really true. And that's what I think God wants us to do, and gives us the opportunity to do even as we age.
Well, you know, Dave, I'm thinking about all the gifts and skills and talents that God places into every single one of us. And then there comes that time where we can place them on the altar, use them all for kingdom purpose, which is what we should be doing all the time. But we usually get caught up with our careers or, you know, raising family, all of those types of things. But now when you get to that stage in life where the main thing really is that children have been raised, careers may be behind us. And now we go, wait a minute, where can I really, truly be intentional about applying those? You've got a great conference that is going to be coming up to help people navigate through some of those things. Why don't you share with us a little bit of the details around the conference, and what people might come to expect when they, uh, when they attend?
Yes. Saturday, August 16th. Uh, later this summer, uh, we're doing a not too old conference at, uh, hosted by East 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis. Uh, not too old a faith building one day conference for older adults, August 16th. And, uh, on that day, I'll be speaking about some themes related to my book. Not too old, uh, but also we'll have workshops on intentional Christian grandparenting with some friends from the Legacy Coalition that many of your listeners, I'm sure are familiar with. Financial planning tips for older adults. Physical fitness tips for older adults. Tips for dealing with grieving, loss, and that kind of thing. We're going to have workshops on how to be a healthy, intergenerational church, helping older adults share their faith in Christ, and a panel discussion that I'm looking forward to on retirement. And along with that, and lunch will be included in some breaks and exhibitors and so on. But we'll also have a wonderful pipe organ concert featuring Wayne Lundberg from our E9. One church is a master musician, and that'll be first thing in the morning as people are arriving to listen to him. So and then the great opportunity to just be with hundreds of other people who are in the zone over age 50, perhaps. And of course, it's open to anybody, and we'd love to have people come.
Hey, Dave, you've been also well, well, first of all, let me back up before I even go there. I was going to talk about the book for just a second, but we will talk about that. As far as, um, as far as the event, what do we need to do to be able to come? Do we need tickets? What are we what do we need to do? I want to be there.
Yeah, thanks for asking. Kelly. You can just register by going to the church's website e911.com and click events. So it's the letter E and the number 91E91 church.com. And then click events and you can register there. There's currently an early bird registration at a reduced cost. Um and all you have to do is go there and you can register and sign up. Um, the registration includes the lunch, the program and so on. And a copy of my book. Not too old.
Oh, cool.
Well, Dave, you know, a lot of us don't like the concept, the idea of getting older, that is something that we all have to face. So what are the likes and dislikes that, you know, maybe you found in this season of life, you know, in that. Medium, medium old phase of.
The medium old season. Well, if you look for them, there are things that are great about getting older. I like, for example, having a long marriage. My wife, Candy, and I will celebrate 50 years of marriage this August. And as we talk about it, first of all, it makes me feel like I'm talking about my grandparents when I say somebody celebrated 50 years of marriage. It sounds so long, but I love that my wife and I have experienced so much of God's grace over those 50 years. I like having long time friends. There are people that I don't see very often, but when we get together, we step back into conversation. There's something rich and deep about having long, decades long friendships. I love being a grandfather, and I've learned from my friends at the Legacy Coalition about intentionality as a grandparent. And so that's very meaningful to me. And mainly, I just love seeing the faithfulness of God over the long haul in your life. But also, I have to admit, there are things I don't like about getting older. The physical challenges somebody said they joked head and shoulders. Knees and toes is no longer just a song to me now. It's a diagnosis.
I'm feeling that this morning, Dave.
Me too. And somebody else.
Joked, you know, I'm at the stage in life where if I tie my shoes, I ask myself, what else can I do while I'm down here?
But I don't like that.
And most older people that I know would agree. I don't like that time is passing so quickly, and I don't like that change happens so fast and so often. About the time I figure out how to use my cell phone, they upgraded and now it's all changed and different. And so change is dealing with change. But through all of that, I see God's hand at work. And actually he's helped us. If you think about it, many of us who are older have navigated our way through lots of changes over the course of our lives. and God does not change. His word, does not change. The basic needs of human beings do not change. And so we really have a lot to offer in this season of our life for the Lord.
Now you've heard Dave referencing his book. I want to let you know. Listening this morning. It is titled Not Too Old. Turning your later years into greater Years, and you're going to learn more about it. Uh, at, at the event. But also I want to let you know it is available over at Amazon.com. And I got to ask you, Dave, because I opened up the table of contents and right out of the chute and this intrigues me. Uh, chapter one, you need to read this book, even if you're young. I wanted you to address that, if you would.
Well, the reason I say that is because, first of all, um, you may. Even if you're young now, you're going to you're going to need to deal with the issues that we talk about in this book. Um, if you're young, you might be somebody who's already thinking deeply about life and its purpose. Um, Eventually you will. Eventually you're going to have to come to grips with it. So it's wise to think about these things when you are young. Remember now your creator in the days of your youth, the Bible says, and then it goes on in that chapter, Ecclesiastes 12, to talk about some of the challenges that lie ahead of you in old age. So it's smart to think about these things when you're young. Of course, people who read the book, some might be old already, some are young, but they're they're going to be old. Others, we know people who are old. And one reason I wrote the book to was to help people have a better understanding of the older generation. We've got parents who are aging, grandparents who are aging. Sometimes we're sandwiched in in midlife between older parents who have many needs and adult children who have many needs. This book can help you understand what's going on. Plus, in the church, we need to realize America's aging population provides many opportunities and challenges that the church needs to be addressing. The US U.S. Census Bureau estimates that by 2030, when the last of the baby boomer generation moves into older adulthood, more than 73 million residents of our country are over age 65 will live in the United States. There are something like 10,000 baby boomers every week turning 80 in our country, and by 2030, the baby boomers will all have reached 80. So we have, you know, that verse in the Bible where it says the the fields are white unto harvest? Well, if you talk about the color of our hair, that's literally true. There are a lot of older people who need the Lord, and we can't just forget about them and assume that they're all spiritually okay. There are a lot of older people who need Christ, too.
Yeah. Oh, absolutely. And, you know, I think scripturally, you know, palm trees, they're known for their long lifespan. And in Psalm 92, I know this is a connection with you. Verses 12 through 15, it says, the righteous flourish like the palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. They are planted in the house of the Lord. They flourish in the courts of our God. They still bear fruit in old age, and they are ever full of sap and green. To declare that the Lord is upright, he is our rock, and this, and there is no unrighteousness in him. That word right there, planted in the house of the Lord, flourishing in the court and bearing fruit in old age. That is what we are called to do. And that's the focus of what this conference is. So one more time, where are folks going to go to find out the details about this event?
