You know, there is an old adage Rex Hunt used to say it all the time. We can put a man on the moon, but we can't get a half decent phone call the premiere of South Australia. We hope is joining us. Premier. Welcome maybe in the year.
Good morning Leath and happy to you to you two and your listeners.
Maybe you go much better. Hey the beauties of technology. Huh, thank you good is a proposed new suburb, This is exciting Southwick.
Yeah.
Look, we've made a decision as a state government that the Severdon Brewery site, which we've acquired to make sure that we get to market as quickly as possible, are a great new development for young families in South Australia that we're going to name it Southwick. So it was actually, believe it or not, that parcel Land was originally named subject Suthwk. There was a whole suburb of Southwick in and around that part of Fetherdon. So when this is developed and we'll see homes being built here throughout the course of next year with people expected to move in hopefully by the end of next year, that they'll live in the suburb of Southwick and then We've invited people in and around the feather and brewery site in the suburb of Thebdon. We've invited them to be part of a couple of rounds of consultation to determine whether or not they want to be going back to the original name of subject as well.
So the Department for Housing and Urban Development, you are seeking the feedback in how it works, so premier you're getting feedback straight away. What's the what's the vibe been this morning?
Oh? Look, I think there's there's definitely an attractiveness. I think I think it's a bit of a laid amazia that you know, to name the brewery site Southik and call that create a new suburb of southic. I think that's welcomed and gives the place an identity that's consistent with its historical name.
But for residents and businesses.
In the immediate surrounds of the brewery site, I think it'd be interesting to see what their feedback is.
I think there's a fair bit of attractiveness to it. Will there will always be questions.
Asked Bill White and see what the two rounds of consultation come back, which has been done in conjunction with the surveyor General and then there'll be a recommendation to government that follows.
You know, I've talked about a lot of issues on the radio PREMI here over time, nothing gets more people excited. I think when you talk about nostalgic than green death, there is a real affiliation and affinity for something better in this state.
I was going to I were just talking before with the cople people at the press conference that I isertainly remember you know, my old man having a long neck of obvious something better in the fridge that was pretty pretty stock standard those years ago. So there is a degree of nostalgia there. But look, it is the original name of the suburb, as was the case back in the eighteen hundreds, and there is a lot of history in this site. I had the chance to have a look at where Kennel Light's cottage was before the brewer was built over the top of it, and they'll be part of that that's look to be exposed and given an appropriate historical treatment. But belief, you know, the main game here isn't the name, it's what we're actually doing on the site. We made a decision as a government to acquire this because we want to get product to market as quickly as possible.
The master place has been done.
Six thousand square meters of the land is being returned to parkland on the River Torrens that will now become publicly accessible on the.
Southern side of the River Torrens.
It's mediately adjacent to the tram, the train, the boat and development. The parklands up the road from the hospital and when the new children's hospital will be located. So this will be a great place for people to live, whether they're working in the health sector, whether the AKC or a cleaner, it doesn't really matter. It's going to be a mixed use development. Some properties will be at an affordable price point. Others will reflect a premium place to live. But we're creating a What we're trying to do more than anything else is just get more homes on the market as quickly as possible, because that's critical to the economic growth of the state that we're enjoying at the moment.
It is such a great parcel of land and we take it for granted premier how big it is now that it's been raised the Brewer, it's huge.
It's all fenced off at the moment, so it's hard for people to get a idea from the street. But when I was looking around it this morning, it is massive, like it is a big parcel land. Bit of context from that master planning exercise, there are going to be thirteen hundred dwellings here, one thousand and three hundred dwellings, so at least a few thousand people will be living here in the not too distant future.
We're working with the private.
Sector to get it done as quickly as we can, but by the government owning it, we can master plan it quickly and get the resoning all sorted and then put lots out to the private market for them to then build. And that's what we're doing as clearly as possible. Like I said, the first home is to be coming on line by the end of next year. That's moving as in the context of developments in strategic infu locations.
That's warp speed.
So it reflects the sense of urgency that we've got as a government around the housing challenge.
It is such a prime piece of land Premier. When you look, you're right next to the entertainment center and you've got the gov Downport Road across from beneath them. It's amazing. Thank you for squeezing you. See, I do like in one of our text messages suggested to the idea of the interstate people mispronouncing it as they've mispronounced Ebanon all these years. So maybe we're going to have a little bit of Southwark on the Melbourne and City News services.
Nothing wrong with a bit of mispronunciation.
When you when you've got a last name as hard to say as mine and you sort of become accustomed.
To it, you must enjoy it.
So it's good statute to the limitations has passed. Did you ever sneak a little sip of Dad's Southik the Green Death when you're a kid?
Just I couldn't possibly confirm with the Nihiliks.
All right, thank you Premier. I appreciate your time. Sorry about the technical issues that yougo. The Premier of South Australia, Peter melanowskis so the Department of Housing and Urban Development proposed new suburb of Suthwck as I mentioned earlier. So if you're can imagine that entire space, it's huge, from light Terrace all the way up to effectively the entertainment center there at the back of the Brewery, so where the brewery lights are, where you turn left to go past in Zosi old restaurant, and obviously the entertainment center there all the way down to Stirling Street and jew Street. So it's a huge parcel of land one billion dollars mixed use development there at the old brewery site. So that is the proposed new I think it'll get over the line. It's a nod to history. It's also a as I said, it's an enduring and endearing name in South Australia. I don't think I've ever had another topic quite go as excitedly as green death and thoughts of that. So we will see. The Survey General will consider the feedback and then they will make the recommendations to the Minister for Planning, Nick Champion, and away we go. So the Premier of South Australia
