Mornings with Eric and Brigitte Book Club - Fly Through the Bible

You're listening to mornings with Eric and Bridget right here on Moody Radio 89.3, and.

There's nothing quite like that 30 zero zero zero foot view. I mean, the favorite part of the plane ride is sitting at the window and looking out as we take off as we land. I've gotten some fantastic shots that way. And really, in a word, that's what we're doing. We're taking a 30 zero zero zero foot view of God's Word.

Eric, we are. And it is fascinating when you see things from up above. It can be a little scary at times when you see things from up above, but it is really fascinating to get that look. Now, some you do want to get down and get into things eventually, but that overview just really helps you look at a map and see where you're headed eventually. That's why I'm so glad that we have this resource that we've been using for our book club, Fly Through the Bible with Pastor Colin Smith.

Pastor Smith, thank you so much for joining us. Obviously, you are passionate about God's Word and helping people understand it better. And is that a pretty good description of the book? That 30 zero zero zero foot view?

Oh, that's a perfect description. Yeah. I kind of envision flying over something vast and wonderful, like the Grand Canyon. I mean, it's it's so enormous. How can you even take it in to take a flyover? I think if one ever had that opportunity would be a marvelous experience and would give you a sense of, wow, this is absolutely vast, and I must get down there on the ground and discover more. And of course, the Bible is such a vast book. We need a place to begin a sense of what is the whole of this? What is the scope of it, what is it all about, and how you've described this book is exactly what I've hoped and prayed would be the means that that God would use to help people.

Okay, so as we've gone through this first series of people in the Old Testament, we see Adam and Abraham and I'm like, okay, I get it. And Moses and then David and then Daniel. Joseph? No. None of those. We go to Ezra. What? Why do we end up at Ezra? There's. There's so many key people in the Old Testament.

Yeah. That's right. And he's one of the lesser known names, certainly in that gallery of five. He's the least well known. But the point here is that the Old Testament has a storyline that begins in the Garden of Eden with Adam and then goes through, as you pointed out, God's very special, making himself known to Abraham and promising to bless all the families of the earth through a descendant of Abraham. And then we have Moses and David. But then at the end of the Old Testament, as we follow the story of the line of people that God has promised to bless, what we find is that they rebel against him time and time and time again, until they are taken out of the land that God promised to give to them. And then many years later, they're brought back and they are brought back under the under the leadership of several people. Ezra is one of them. Nehemiah is the other. But I really had to have one of these leaders from the last part of the story to complete the overview of the story of the Old Testament, and Ezra was the one I decided was the one to go with there.

How do all these people point us to Jesus?

Well, the first thing is that the old do Bridget. And so thank you so much for that. And they point to Jesus in several ways. I mean, Adam points us to Jesus because of the absolute catastrophe of how both he and Eve changed internally and how the world externally changed around them. And there was a desperate need for a deliverer who God promised would come. That promise was given to Adam. So that's the very first point to Jesus. Then Abraham, as we were saying just a moment ago, the promise is that God will bless people from all the families of the earth, but it's going to come through some descendant of Abraham. Then we find the same with David, that it's going to be a descendant of David who's going to bring blessing and deliverance to the world. And Moses, of course, points to the Lord Jesus Christ in that he was unable to bring people into the promised land, was able to give them laws, but was not able to give them the ability to fulfill them. So all the way through, we're being pointed to the Lord Jesus Christ.

A little bit of a spoiler alert here in the last section of the book. One of the gifts that we receive as believers is the Holy Spirit. Do we see the Holy Spirit in the lives of these five people? Is is he missing in the Old Testament or is the Holy Spirit there?

No, he's there from the beginning, and indeed right from the very opening of the Bible, where we're told that the Spirit of God brooded over the waters at the creation. So God has always been Father and Son and Holy Spirit. I find it very fascinating that in the book of Genesis you have God saying, let us make man in our image The father, the son, and the Holy Spirit have always been. And that's, of course, why you have, for example, David praying do not take your Holy Spirit from me. But the distinct and wonderful thing when we get to the New Testament, is that the Holy Spirit is the promised gift of God to everyone who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ. And that precious gift is at the very heart of what it means to be a Christian believer. So there's a profound sense in which we have more than was there in the Old Testament, but the beginnings of the gift of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer is clearly there in the Old Testament, too.

We are talking with Colin Smith, who is author of Fly Through the Bible. All right. So the first five people that we talk about here from the Old Testament. Who would you have chosen if you could have picked a six?

Oh, no.

That's a very good question. And nobody else has asked that question before. Well, I Well, I mean, there's so many that come to mind. I suppose Joshua is one of the first, uh, that comes to mind because of what he did in bringing God's people into the land of Canaan. I think Solomon's a very important character in the Old Testament, because he built the temple. And of course, that points in so many ways to the Lord Jesus Christ, who becomes the meeting place with God. There are so many. But if you're going to do a flight, you've got to just choose a few. And I really do think that these five stories give us at least a very broad outline of the story of God's people in the Old Testament.

We should let friends know that you can fly, but there are other ways to go through Scripture. And you've you've done that. There's another new resource coming out, isn't there?

Yeah. Well, um, and folks might guess what's coming next. It's drive through the Bible, because once you've flown over the scriptures to get in a Jeep and, and go and explore more, um, takes you further And at the end of the year, God willing, we'll have hike through the Bible as well, so people will be able to access the Bible story at different levels. But for a person who's looking for a place to begin, there's no better way than to begin by flying.

And why do you encourage people to begin, or maybe begin anew? Maybe it's been a long time since someone has really picked up the Bible, other than when they're sitting in church. Why should we pick up the Bible? Fly through it. Hike through it. Drive through it, but just be in it.

Well, because the Bible is the living Word of God. The very nature of it is that it brings transformation in a person's life. That's why in Peter, for example, the word of God is described as the living seed. You know, it actually brings new life. And the Word of God sustains the new life that it brings. Which is why Jesus said, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. And so by getting into the Word of God, that's how new life comes to us. And that's how new life sustain is sustained in us. And perhaps most of all, this is how we come to know the Lord Jesus Christ, and to love him and to trust him and to find hope in him. So, you know, anytime I speak to someone who thinks that opening the Bible is just about getting more information, I say, no, no, you haven't understood what this is. This is the living word of God. And it's going to change your life, and it's going to change your life by bringing you into living touch with Jesus.

Well, I might have done a little better in my Old Testament survey class if it was this quick, but we made it through the Old Testament as fast as I ever have. We are finished with week one of our book club, and we're looking forward to getting into the New Testament next week. Bridget.

Yeah, and he's already previewed it. We're going to talk about the key moments of Jesus's life. By the way. You can get yourself a copy of this book. Check it out. When you text club (561) 737-6035 or just go to Eric and Bridget.
