The Income Tax Department has issued a high-priority advisory warning taxpayers against a surge in phishing scams involving fraudulent SMS messages and emails. Fraudsters are impersonating the department by using fake sender IDs and look-alike websites to steal sensitive personal information, including PAN numbers, passwords, and Bank OTPs.

The department clarified that it never requests confidential data or OTPs via SMS or phone calls. Taxpayers are urged to use only the official portal (www.incometax.gov.in) for all services and to report any suspicious communication to the National Cyber Crime authorities immediately.
