Chief LaBarbera, a retired battalion chief with the Fire Department of New York City and an executive board member of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, shares his memories of that fateful day.

He recalls the moment he learned of the attacks while at the gym and rushed to Ground Zero. Despite orders to stay put, he and several others disobeyed to help injured civilians and first responders. Chief LaBarbera describes the overwhelming devastation at the World Trade Center site and the courageous efforts of firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel who went into the buildings to rescue people.

He emphasizes the importance of understanding the magnitude of the tragedy and the heroism displayed by first responders. Chief LaBarbera also discusses how, in the days following 9/11, people across the country showed unprecedented unity, respect for first responders, and a return to faith.
