China's President Xi Jinping has congratulated Donald Trump on his latest win at the US Presidential Election, and urged both nations to find the "right way to get along", as looming US tariffs threatened to return them to the days of a trade war years ago.
In an interview last month, Trump had said “To me, the most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff”.
Whether China’s leaders take that threat at face value or as a negotiating tactic is still unclear, with its state media being unusually quiet in the run-up to this US election. However, think tanks in the People’s Republic warn Trump will be far more difficult to negotiate with than during the previous trade war.
On this episode of Morning Shot, Ross Feingold, Research Director at Caerus Consulting, and former Asia Chairman of Republicans Abroad shares his insights.
