Morning Shot: Behind the oil spill - Mitigation & monitoring needed for longer term impact on marine biodiversity & fish farms

View descriptionShare

Extensive clean-up measures are underway to mitigate the impact of a 400-tonne oil spill caused by the collision between a dredging boat and a bunker vessel at Pasir Panjang Terminal.

With the removal of oil from the sea and oil-soaked sand from affected beaches largely completed, authorities are moving on to the next phase of clean-up, which will be more complex and is expected to take around three months. This will involve cleaning up oil remnants in places that are not easily accessible, such as rock bunds and breakwaters, where oil could be trapped in crevices or deeper below the sand.

Given the scale of the oil spill and other regional environmental challenges, what sort of longer term impact could we see in our marine ecosystem and fish farm business, and how can we better mitigate the negative implications?

On this episode of Morning Shot, Chester Gan, Marine Programme Lead, WWF-Singapore shares his insights.
