These are just a few examples of standard units of measurement that we probably use in some way, shape or form on a daily basis. 

They form part of what is formally known as the metric system, which was created in France in the 1790s to simplify and consolidate the myriad ways people used to measure things. 

On Metric System Day, Emaad and Ryan dive into how the imperial system (which preceded the metric system) evolved, the interesting tale behind the formation of the International Prototype of the Kilogram (IPK), why older units of measurement like miles, feet and pints are still widely used, and historical mistakes caused by confusion between measurement systems.
