The Agenda: Should children be expected to be strong when a family member dies?
How do you explain death and grief to a child, especially when the adults around them are struggling too?
The award-winning play How To Be A Kid follows 12-year-old Molly, who takes on the role of caregiver after her grandmother dies, looking after her grieving mother and younger brother.
Its director, Ian Loy, draws on his own experience of losing his father at the age of 10. On The Agenda, Hongbin Jeong speaks with Ian about helping children navigate grief, the expectations placed on them to be strong, and how attitudes towards childhood and loss have changed across generations.
