The Agenda: Do Singaporeans support our own musicians enough?

View descriptionShare

Singapore has produced musicians who have made their mark both at home and on the international stage, but have we always been willing to support our own?

From the local pop stars of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s to a new generation of Gen Z listeners discovering homegrown music through TikTok, Instagram and streaming platforms, the way Singaporeans consume local music is changing.

So, are younger Singaporeans finally embracing homegrown artistes in a way previous generations didn't? Has social media made local music more accessible and could it be giving Singaporean musicians the audience they’ve always deserved?

On The Agenda, Hongbin Jeong speaks with Singaporean singer-songwriter Sherman Zhuo about whether Singapore is finally learning to appreciate its own music.
