More than 35,000 teachers will get a pay hike of between 5 per cent and 10 per cent from Oct 1 as part of efforts to attract and retain talent. 

The pay increase will also apply to about 1,600 allied educators and 800 pre-school teachers in Ministry of Education kindergartens.

Speaking to reporters during a 10-minute doorstop interview at the Ministry of Communications and Information on April 16, a day after the long-awaited handover date was announced - Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will take on the role of senior minister in the new Cabinet, which should not have major changes. DPM Wong also confirmed that he will announce the make-up of his new Cabinet in a press conference a few days before he is sworn in as Singapore’s fourth prime minister on May 15.

Singapore stocks fell at the opening bell this morning, tracking losses in global markets amid worries over geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East. 

In early trade, the Straits Times Index (STI) fell 0.3 per cent to 3,175.63 points after 39.3 million securities changed hands in the broader market. 

In terms of companies to watch, Singapore Airlines, after the national carrier and its low-cost arm Scoot together moved 3.3 million passengers in March, up 20.7 per cent from the previous year.

Elsewhere from more on TSMC’s earnings to China’s Q1 GDP numbers, more corporate and international headlines remain in focus.
