Singapore passed new anti-scam laws this week, raising the maximum fine for online platforms that fail to comply with anti-scam requirements from S$1 million to S$10 million.

But will the tougher penalties push platforms to detect and stop suspicious accounts and advertisements earlier or will scammers simply adapt their tactics?

On Viewpoint, Lynlee Foo speaks to Benjamin Ang, Senior Fellow and Head of Digital Impact Research at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, NTU, about whether tougher penalties will actually push platforms to do more to prevent scams, and the challenges of keeping up with increasingly sophisticated scam tactics.
