A Singapore animated film just made it into the main competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival for the first time in the festival's 65-year history.
It's a historic moment. But it also raises a harder question: if this is what it takes to make one film, can Singapore actually build a sustainable animation industry? Or is this a one-off?
On Industry Insight, Lynlee Foo speaks to Justin Deimen, Executive Producer of The Violinist and Executive Director, at Singapore’s Intercultural Theatre Institute, about what it took to bring the film to this level, the challenges facing local animators, and whether this moment can translate into long-term growth for Singapore’s animation scene.
