The NBA is the most watched professional sport in China but it’s under threat of losing its entire business in the country. This, because of a since-deleted tweet by the Houston Rockets General Manager, Daryl Morey. Over the weekend, he tweeted support for the Hong Kong protesters, writing: “Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong.” This has set off a firestorm. Corporate China quickly moved to condemn Morey’s post. One of the NBA’s media partners, Tencent, and Chinese state broadcaster, CCTV, have issued statements that they will not be broadcasting the Rockets’ games. Chinese sports apparel brand, Li Ning, has also sought to distance itself from what it has called “upsetting comments”.
