When faced with a dilemma that requires careful handling and wisdom, do we cast about for a solution within our own ability? Why do we so easily forget that his presence has the power to destroy doubt and give us power over our problems? It is easier to trust when we seem to have nothing to fear. When I spend time talking to my kids about the presence of the Lord in their lives, I find myself pointing them to things around them that they can see, hold, and be aware of to help them grasp the truth of his presence everywhere and at all times. Can we stand firm in the face of flattery and corruption? Flattery can mesmerize us. It tells us what we want to hear, and it’s certainly easier to listen to than criticism. Flattery shows favor and approval, something we all long for. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). John 3:16 is probably the most well known bible verse of all time. Children memorize it. Street corner preachers put it on signs. Quarterbacks write it on their eye black. Most of us can easily rattle it off without giving much thought to its meaning. God loved us so much that he was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to save us from death and give us eternal life. A Christian friend once told me that motherhood is a season of sacrifice. As moms, we set aside many of our own desires to nurture and care for our children. “Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the son of man is?’ And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ He said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are Christ, the son of the living God.’ And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. "Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly" (Proverbs 14:29). The anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. It doesn't even produce godliness in our kids. In fact, this week's passage tells us that when we rush to anger, we are exalting foolishness. Uggg. You know what it looks like. As a mama investing daily into her children, I grow weary and worried in the journey. I watch my children making choices and know that although I can lead them in the way they should go, it's only the Good Shepherd who can care for them when they get stuck or need comfort I can't give. There is no pretending that we ourselves are prone to wonder and forget to rest when everything the world has to offer distracts us. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, will take our hand and lead us to the quiet places. When was the last time you were amazed? Truly, think about it. It's tricky isn't it? I know I've been amazed by how quickly my house can get messy or how the dryer shrinks my jeans. I've been amazed by the resources it takes to keep a family thriving or amazed by how long it takes to get through a grocery store checkout. But it's possible I have weakened a bit of the word’s intended potency. In the casualness of our language, the contorting and comfortability that perhaps changes with time and culture, we lose something, don't we? That's a risk, a loss. "Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven, that's why she loved so much. But the one who is forgiven little loves little" (Luke 7:47). Whether you grew up in the church or not, we all have been forgiven much. Verses like Galatians 5:16-21 make it pretty clear that God sees sexual immorality, drunkenness, jealousy, and selfish ambition as all the same. “Wisdom is good with an inheritance, an advantage to those who see the sun. For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it" (Ecclesiastes 7:11-12). The Hebrew word for wisdom is, “chokmah,” and is used 145 times in the Old Testament. It means skill in war, administration, shrewdness, prudence in religious affairs, wisdom both ethical and religious. It carries with it an implication that leads to action. Chokmah impacts our decisions and how we serve God. When a police officer was shot and killed a few years ago on the campus of Virginia Tech, where I went to school, we baked cookies and made cards for each batch that read, "Thank you for protecting me," and we snuck around after dark delivering them to all of the police officers we could think of who lived near our home. Our boys thought they were superheroes sleuthing around the neighborhood, and the way I see it, they were superheroes, serving true heroes who give up so much to keep us safe. We don't have to serve others, but Jesus did. As moms, the most important prayer we utter is for our children to be saved. Of all the things we pray for our girls, our most desperate and urgent pleas are for her to be saved. Everything else paled in comparison to that request. All the prayers we utter for their identity and hearts and minds and relationships begin in the hope of salvation. Our daughters can only walk in the fullness of their identity in Christ when they belong to Him. There are only two types of men to choose from, wise or foolish. The foolish man says in his heart that there is no God and acts like a law unto himself. He only cares about what's best for himself, looks out for number one, and serves his own needs first all the days of his life. The wise man fears and obeys God and has security and the blessings of a loving God and all the power of heaven on his side. With God's help, our sons can submit their lives and hearts to him and choose to follow the path of wisdom. There is a peace we can't manufacture on our own. If we want to experience true peace, we must be fully aware that we cannot do anything to create or sustain it. We must continually lay our thoughts and concerns down before the Lord. The key to experiencing the peace of God is understanding that it can only come from God. Let's face it, there's a little discontentment in all of us. If we have straight hair, you wish it were curly. If you're short, you wish you were tall. The list can go on forever. Being content doesn't come naturally for us. Consider Adam and Eve. They had it all. Their life was really perfect. Yet all it took was the implication by the serpent that they were missing out on something and suddenly everything they had paled in comparison with what they didn't.
