It is back-to-school season, but not like one we have ever experienced before. This new year brings many unknown challenges and today's episode gets into all of that, along with all the opportunities to pray in this time of uncertainty.

Our guest, Tara L. Cole, is the author of "Everyday Prayers for Back-to-School" and "Abide: 40 Ways to Focus on Jesus Daily." She is a wife and mom of three boys, and loves helping moms and their kids build relationships with Jesus together. To top it all off, she is also a teacher, which was very fitting for this topic!

Brooke, Erin, and Tara discuss school choice, all the new stress this year brings, and making this a year of grace. Tara highlights the four areas of prayer for this school year covered in her newest book, including: praying for the right friendships, blessings and insight for our teachers, success in classes, and encouraging our children's unique gifts.

052 - Real Talk About Back To School (with Tara L. Cole)

I talked with some friends recently who said something that I thought perfectly captured the years between the ages of 12 and about 14. They said, one minute you're so proud of who they're becoming and the next you think they might be complete idiots. This is so true, but after talking with my friends, I realized that it's also quite normal. The exponential growth our boys and girls are experiencing during this season makes them scattered, emotional, amazing, dramatic, smart, and a little bit fussy.

It also makes them more able to learn and embrace the world around them than ever before, and that's a good thing. Except, I haven't been enjoying it that much. I have been parenting from a place of fear and have let the stress of that lifestyle keep me from experiencing the joy of watching some of my very favorite people grow up.

Nothing seems to challenge us to conform to the image of God like being a parent. I think the preteen years are the worst. The kids are a hormonal mess. They can't remember what they're doing, they bicker non-stop, and if you call them down about the slightest thing, they completely lose it in a shower of accusations.

A Prayer for Putting Off Your Old Self

I tell my kids this until the day they leave the home. When we become disgruntled over petty things like weather, fairness, or material possessions, our remembrance of what true blessings are has slipped far from our focus. We use the word blessings so freely and loosely in our culture today, and yet do we truly understand what it means to live the blessed life?

Perhaps we overcomplicate the Christian life and make it more about comfort and blessings for our needs or what we deserve. When was the last time you thought about what it truly means to be blessed? Listen to today's episode from September McCarthy, from Matthew 5:3-12.
