Climate researcher and hydroclimatologist Stewart Franks has been writing about La Nina and El Nino weather events for years, and says it's not unusual to have consecutive rain seasons.

Luke Grant spoke to Stewart during the previous La Nina period last summer.

The bureau has issued a La Nina alert amid heavy rainfall and flooding across parts of the east coast.

Stewart says scientific observations demonstrate it is not unusual to have back-to-back La Nina events, and Australia is currently experiencing this.

He believes carbon emissions and climate change have little to no connection to dry or wet periods.
