Focus On Energy - Saving Agriculture Money Through Energy Efficiency

Wisconsin's state FFA officer team is fresh off a leadership conference in Washington, D.C..  While learning the ropes to policy development was part of their goal, honing how to advocate for ag education and agriculture in general was also a major point.  Cheryl Zimmerman, Executive Director of the Wisconsin FFA Association tells Pam Jahnke about the investment being made in these young leaders. No rain in sight.  Not what a lot of Wisconsin farmers or gardeners want to hear.  Stu Muck explains why we can't seem to wring a bit of moisture out of the atmosphere right now. Everybody likes to get a gift, and our Wisconsin agriculture teachers are no exception.  Teri Barr explains how saying thank you to agriculture instructors and helping them start the new school year prepared, inspired a Pennsylvania company.  Dairy Leaders of Tomorrow and the Dairy Excellence Foundation teamed up to offer anyone a chance to "gift" a box to an agriculture instructor anywhere. How much energy does the average 500 cow dairy operation use in a hot month like July?  You might be surprised!  Pam Jahnke talks with Matt Redetzke of No Joke Dairy in Stratford about that expense.  It's just one motivating point that encouraged the hosts of this year's WI Farm Technology Days to partner with Focus on Energy.  Kevin Weiler, one of four Focus on Energy advisors in the state says Marathon County has been taking advantage of the partnership!  Paid for by Focus on Energy.

The hosts for the 2026 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, No Joke Dairy in Stratford, are examples of what a partnership with Focus on Energy can accomplish. Pam Jahnke visits with Matt Redetzke, one of the brothers farming, about their fifth-generation family farm in Marathon County.  Through careful planning with Focus on Energy, the farm has achieved considerable savings on several projects around the farm. The cows always have clean water to drink, even during the colder months. These waterers save money on energy bills and keep the animals comfortable. • LED Exterior Lighting (2023) o Replaced exterior lights with LED lights. LEDs make outdoor areas safer for everyone and last longer, reducing the need to replace them as often. • Refrigeration Heat Recovery (RHR) System (2020) o Installed an RHR system that takes heat from the milk-cooling process and uses it to warm water for the farm. The farm needs less electricity or fuel to make hot water for cleaning. • Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Vacuum Pump (2019) o Upgraded to a vacuum pump with a VFD to allow the milking system to run at the power needed, instead of at full power all the time. This reduces electricity use and extends equipment life. • High-Bay LED Fixtures (2019) o Improved lighting inside the barn with high-bay LED fixtures to create a brighter, safer workspace while using less energy than traditional high-intensity lamps.

Marathon County is working hard to save energy. In 2025, more than 100 local businesses, manufacturers, schools, hospitals, and farms improved the efficiency of their facilities with support from Focus on Energy. Farming has played a major role in this achievement. Last year, 62 farms in Marathon County completed more than 180 energy-saving projects, resulting in $325,000 in total savings. These upgrades help family farms lower costs and stay strong for the future. No Joke Dairy is a fifth-generation family farm in Marathon County that has belonged to the Redetzke family since 1911. Otto and Ottelia Redetzke built the original barn, and the farm has remained in the family for over a hundred years. Although the family stopped milking cows in 2011, brothers Matt and Sam Redetzke chose to start the dairy again in 2015. They restored the herd and brought the farm back to life. Now, four generations work side by side, making it a family-run farm. The farm cares for 400 cattle in total, including young animals, and has a milking herd of around 200 Jersey cows. The Redetzke family also grows crops on 660 acres to feed their animals, keeping the farm self-sufficient. Dean Edge hails from Rimbey, Alberta, Canada. Edge became only the third Canadian to win the World Livestock Auctioneer Champion  contest, which debuted in 1963.  Edge made a trip to Thorp, WI to appear at the Premiere Livestock Auction yard.  Jill Welke had a chance to find out why this young man decided to pursue this field as his career.   “This world championship might be connected to my name for the next year, but it’s not mine,” Edge said. “It’s ours. I’m going to be working for us for the next year to the very best of my ability to get out there and promote what we do.” As the reigning World Livestock Auctioneer Champion, he will spend the next year driving the custom-wrapped World Livestock Auctioneer Championship pickup all over the country to showcase his talents and promote the livestock industry. Edge can’t wait. Some storms and strong winds are on the way for the weekend.  Stu Muck estimates rainfall amounts and temps for the weekend. Coming from a dairy farm in Watertown, Michelle Stangler has a deep skillset to offer as an Alice in Dairyland candidate.  Stangler, a graduate from UW-River Falls, has spent a lot of time traveling the state gathering stories about Wisconsin agriculture.  She's also ventured beyond the state to get perspective on what the state has versus other geographies.  The Alice in Dairyland finale will be Saturday in Wausau. Milk cooling is one of the biggest energy users on a dairy. Inefficient systems force compressors to run longer and harder, driving up energy costs.  That's a message that resonated with Jordan Matthews from Rosy Lane Holsteins in Watertown.  This dairy operation milks about 1,600 cows across two sites.  The Watertown (Main Farm) site houses all calving operations, high-production cows, and wet calves through six months.  The Paoli (Second Site) is a rented milking facility that manages around 700 pregnant and late-lactation cows.  Two very different setups, but both rely on dependable milk cooling systems. As the harvest winds down, many farms and agribusinesses may be thinking about updating their grain drying systems or revamping irrigation pumps.  Focus on Energy can help!  Jessica Mlsna runs down the opportunities with Pam Jahnke.

Since 2020, Focus on Energy has helped Wisconsin farms and agribusinesses save money with their grain bin tune up program, and energy saving incentives.  In that time, 87 dryers have received incentives to upgrade their grain dryer.  These incentives totaled over $1.5 million.  There are 24 trade allies across the state that have assisted customers in receiving incentives and choosing an energy efficient dryer.  Incentives are available through Focus on Energy for Natural Gas dryers and propane dryers.  If your existing grain dryer is 20 to 30 years old, consider replacing with a newer, more efficient model. Compressed Air Tune-Ups Performing a compressed air leak survey and repairing audible leaks is crucial for maintaining energy efficiency and reducing operational costs. These leaks impact energy costs significantly and affect the overall system efficiency. Customers can save over $1,500 annually by just repairing one audible leak. A compressed air system leak survey can include the following: • Replacing air lubricant separators to the manufacturer’s specs. • Valving off or capping unused equipment or sections of piping. • Evaluating system pressure. • Lubricating and cleaning the compressor motor. • Inspecting condensate traps. • Setting for optimum duration/frequency. • Adjusting or replacing belts if needed. • Cleaning or replacing the filter. • Identifying and fixing air leaks. Sparta Floral & Greenhouses has served Sparta and the surrounding area since the 1860s. It has been owned by the Solberg family since 1945. The “new” greenhouse includes a retail operation and another house with foliage and house plants that are grown year-round. The other two greenhouses on the property are a garden center and a growing operation.  Jessica Mlsna, Focus on Energy Advisor, partnered with the Solberg's contractors to help make their expansion dream come true, with energy savings to boot! The main energy consumption goes to heating. For cooling, they rely on natural ventilation and use half fans (horizontal airflow fans) to help with the airflow when the vents are closed. Over the years, the Solbergs have utilized a variety of fuels, including coal, fuel oil, and now natural gas, which is their main source. Winter is their main heating time, and their energy needs can vary dramatically depending on the weather. They have had monthly heating bills as high as $20,000. The Solbergs also had to deal with an inefficient boiler. Their previous boiler system that used to feed all the greenhouses had leaks and regularly needed to be refilled. The Solbergs worked with Focus on Energy on previous retrofit projects in their older greenhouses. When pursuing this new construction project, their builder was adamant they collaborate with Focus on Energy to ensure they installed the most efficient equipment. Their Energy Advisor helped determine which equipment would qualify for rebates. They bumped up to a more efficient grade of heaters costing equal to the older, inefficient models. The bottom line is that all that additional space, is now efficiently running with savings in the Solberg's pockets. Miltrim Farms of Athens, Wisconsin has been recognized as an Energy Efficiency Excellence Award Winner. FOCUS ON ENERGY®, in partnership with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin Office of Energy Innovation (PSC WI-OEI), is offering energy efficiency incentives for agricultural customers who currently use propane to fuel specific equipment.  Funding for incentives related to energy-efficient propane equipment has been made possible through a federal US Department of Energy State Energy Program grant to the PSC WI-OEI.
