Prices are good for organic grain growers here in Wisconsin, but the market is just as volatile if not more than what we’re seeing at the Chicago Board of Trade for conventional grains. Jim Copher is a specialty grain trader and merchandiser with The DeLong Company. He explains that with organics, there's no price hedging or futures markets. And the largest market mover are imports. Wisconsin organic grain goes to either California or Pennsylvania. The poultry industry is the biggest buyer today. He pulled numbers for us -- on Wednesday, both organic corn and wheat traded at $10.50 a bushel; and beans at $27.00. Rail is primarily used to haul organic grains. It used to take a rail car 2-3 weeks to go to Pennsylvania and back. Now it's 5-6 weeks.
