U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin has teamed up with Iowa’s Senators to introduce a bill that aims to lower input prices for farmers, specifically fertilizer. It’s called the Fertilizer Research Act, and it would essentially lay the groundwork for future fertilizer policy. The bill would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to conduct a study on competition and trends in the fertilizer market to determine their impacts on price. Baldwin says it would provide much-needed transparency for American farmers. She says over 30 percent of last growing season’s input costs were spent on fertilizer, yet farmers have little insight into how prices are determined. It’s already garnered support from the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association. Baldwin would like to see the bill passed on its own or in the Farm Bill. She’s optimistic that it’ll get done in 2024.
