Earlier this month, the Ekurhuleni Department of Health raised concerns about the circulation of counterfeit condoms, particularly in Gauteng province.
According to reports, these fake products lack certification from the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), rendering them unreliable for preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, and unwanted pregnancies. Investigations have revealed that these counterfeit condoms are often sold in spaza shops and exhibit noticeable discrepancies in packaging compared to authentic products.
Quantumed (a local supplier of condoms (and lubrication) in SA) has also raised their concerns and is encouraging all to read package labels carefully to ensure they are buying reliable, good quality protection.
Avian Bell, CEO of Quantumed, weighs in now.
