A resident in Naledi, Soweto, with close ties to a spaza shop owner accused of selling snacks that allegedly killed five children, has rubbished claims that they were poisoned.
The children died allegedly after eating the chips on Sunday, which they bought from the shop.
There has been outrage in the community, with some residents shutting down the business, followed by days of looting and protests.
Local Naledi resident, Dineo Mphore, claims her partner of 13 years, an Ethiopian national only known as Daniel, has gone into hiding following the uproar over the deaths of five children in Naledi on Sunday.
