But HIV did not only change individual lives; it transformed the structure of South African families, with many children growing up in the care of grandparents, relatives and even child-headed households after families were torn apart by illness and loss. As medical advances have helped many live longer and healthier lives, what does growing up with HIV look like today, and what lasting impact has the epidemic had on families across the country?
