When parents drop their children at school, they do so believing that their children are going into a place where they will be protected, supervised and cared for. But when something goes terribly wrong,
parents are often left asking a devastating question: who is responsible? Five-year-old Manqoba Mnisi died after an incident at Bernard Isaacs Primary School in Coronationville. His mother is still seeking
answers about what happened to her child, while an independent investigation looks into the circumstances surrounding his death and whether there were failures in the duty of care owed to him.
But Manqoba’s story raises questions that go far beyond one family. When a child is seriously injured or dies at a public school, what rights do parents have? Who can be held accountable, and what should happen when parents feel that the school or authorities have failed to give them answers?
