An Arkansas judge has issued an order for Hunter Biden to appear in person at the Independence County Courthouse in Batesville to explain why he shouldn't be held in contempt for allegedly concealing his finances in the child support battle against the mother of his child. The mother, Lunden Alexis Roberts, has argued that Biden is not complying with a May court order to provide information regarding his finances. Possible punishments for civil and criminal contempt, including up to six months of jail time and sanctions, are being considered. Biden’s ability to pay will be a critical issue in the contempt proceeding, and he will be given the opportunity to respond to questions about his financial status at the hearing.

The child, Navy Joan Roberts, was born in Arkansas in August 2018, and Biden previously settled with Roberts for $2.5 million in 2020, but the case was later reopened. Biden is currently in a court battle in Arkansas to lower his payments. Roberts’ lawyers have filed to change the surname of her daughter to 'Biden' and argued that the name is synonymous with being successful, financially acute, and politically powerful, but Biden’s lawyers are fighting to block the name change. One of the sanctions being considered is striking Biden’s legal filings fighting the name change, as ruled by Judge Holly Lodge Meyer.

In June, Biden and Roberts will sit for a deposition, where Biden must answer questions about his income, investments, art sales, and other relevant financial transactions. It was revealed that he is under federal investigation for his taxes shortly after the 2020 election. While Republicans have accused him of potential crimes related to foreign lobbying or money laundering, U.S. Attorney David Weiss, the Delaware prosecutor overseeing the case and a Trump-appointed holdover, may have narrowed his focus to Biden potentially committing tax fraud and lying on a federal gun form when purchasing a revolver. IRS whistleblowers have come forward to allege the investigation has been mishandled and politicized.
