Several journalists in the mainstream media have attacked ESPN broadcaster Samantha Ponder for calling out biological men competing in women's sports, according to reports. USA Today sports journalist Lindsay Schnell was among those who criticized Ponder for advocating fairness in women's sports after the ESPN presenter was accused of promoting bigotry.

In a tweet on Thursday, Ponder praised the support she had received for defending women's sports from trans male competitors: 'I’ve had so many ppl msg me, stop me in the street to say thank you+ tell me stories about girls who are afraid to speak up for fear of lost employment/being called hateful'. Ponder also argued: 'It is not hateful to demand fairness in sports for girls.'

Nancy Armour, a USA Today sports columnist, criticized Ponder in a Sunday column, urging people not to be fooled by groups promoting 'fairness' which were actually bigots. Armour argued that trans girls and women had the right to play sports, and accused Ponder of promoting hate, fear and ignorance, and plain old bigotry. Other journalists, including Schnell, then shared the column and criticized Ponder's position.
