Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, gave high praise to Republican Senator Tim Scott on Friday, hours after the senator officially filed paperwork to run for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Musk tweeted, “Great statement by @votetimscott,” along with a clip of Scott’s first political ad of the 2024 campaign. In the video, Scott spoke of the importance of teaching young people ‘individual responsibility,’ emphasizing that American children are ‘growing up immersed in a culture where everyone's a victim.’ He also stated that those who are able-bodied should work, those who take out loans should pay them back and those who commit violent crimes should be sent to jail.

Scott became the only Black Republican in the Senate after being appointed by then-Governor Nikki Haley in 2013 to fill the seat vacated by Jim DeMint. He has been re-elected twice since then, and recently filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission to run for the presidency. He is the second politician from South Carolina, which holds the third contest in the Republican presidential nominating calendar, to launch a presidential campaign. The first was the former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, who declared her candidacy on February 14.

Scott launched a $6 million ad campaign in key presidential primary states on Friday, ahead of his scheduled campaign announcement on May 22. He is known for his fundraising prowess and enters the race with his campaign coffers well-stocked, reporting nearly $22 million in cash on hand at the end of last year. This was due in large part to the senator’s convincing 25-point re-election victory in November in reliably red South Carolina. A pair of Scott-aligned super PACs also started 2023 with roughly $16 million in the bank, thanks to contributions from numerous Republican mega-donors, including Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.
