Tennessee House Bill 883 is going through committee with an amendment that could open the door to leniency on allowing abortions. Dr. Omar Hamada says the language of the amendment needs changed to keep the initial trigger bill that became law 30 following the Dobbs ruling, from losing strength.
1) A physician's "good faith medical judgement" needs to be changed to a physician's "reasonable medical judgement". The way it's written leaves open a huge door as the state can't prove subjective bad faith. We need an objective standard against which to measure.2) Abortion is allowed to "prevent or treat a (potential/possible) medical emergency". "Prevent" needs to be removed as there is no reason to abort based on something that does not yet or may never exist. Those are the two primary issues that could open the barn door wide.
