May 27th, 2026  MBC News Host: Danielle Dufour May 27th is proclaimed the 50th anniversary of the First Nations University of Canada in Saskatachewan (FNUniv) among it’s four campuses. “Culture connects them to their identity,” said Elder Margaret Rockthunder. “We’re keeping that language alive.” President Dr. Jacqueline Ottmann reminisced about the dreams of the ancestors who had the courage to create a place grounded in language and worldviews, where students could be who they are and said, “Education is considered a value.” FNUniv was originally called the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (SIFC) and was founded in 1976 with an agreement with the University of Regina. June 2026 MBC News Host: Danielle Dufour Brianda Robillard, from Black Lake Denesuline First Nation representing Saskatchewan, is one of 20 delegates competing to be the next Miss Indigenous Canada 2026. “I feel very honoured to represent my community,” said Robillard. Miss Indigenous Canada is a leadership development and ambassador program, geared towards First Nations, Métis, and Inuit youth. The final event will be held on Six Nations of the Grand River, Ontario from July 20th-25th 2026. She was drawn to the program by how they presented the importance of leadership and ethics. “They are trying to teach Indigenous women to embrace their culture, their identity, their leadership skills, empowering other women, getting yourself out there and what I can do to help,” said Robillard. June 1, 2026 MBC News Host: Danielle Dufour The Saskatchewan Government recently announced updates to Saskatchewan’s child care program with impacts to eligibility including age coverage, standard daily child care hours and operational funding effective July 1st to protect the long-term sustainability of subsidized child care systems. “The changes that are coming in July 1st are really going to hamper the amount of spaces available, especially in rural Saskatchewan,” said Joan Pratchler, MLA Opposition Shadow Minister of early learning and child care. Pratchler explained when a full-time child care space wasn’t being used during a day, the daycare could ‘stack’ or take on a casual or drop-in child to fill that open space. The government would allow them to have the $10 a day funding grant. With the changes, this is no longer the case. “The most amount as of July 1st that a child care provider can charge if a casual wants to join is $10 a day, that means a dollar an hour now,” said Pratchler. Those extra casual spaces offered funding that daycare centers could use to run their operations. Many operators will no longer offer drop-in child care as of July 1st because they won’t be compensated to the level they require to fully support a child being in the centre. The Northern Lights School Division hopes a new Bachelor of Education program in Pinehouse will help solve long-standing teacher shortages in the community.  The four-year program will allow students to earn their teaching degrees close to home beginning this September.  Director of Education Jason Young spoke with MBC Radio News about the new program.

June 1, 2026  MBC News Host: Amber Bear People who need identification to secure employment, open bank accounts, access government programs, or file taxes will have an opportunity to get help at the upcoming Super ID Clinic hosted by the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC). The clinic will take place on Thursday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1211 First Avenue West in Prince Albert and is open to anyone who needs assistance obtaining identification or navigating government services. One of the biggest barriers many people face when applying for jobs is a lack of valid identification. Kelcy McDougall says to help address that issue, the clinic will cover the costs of several essential forms of ID, including birth certificates, Social Insurance Numbers (SIN), Saskatchewan health cards, and status cards. They crawl on animals and humans and occasionally latch on and burry their heads to feast on our blood. Emily Jenkins, a professor of veterinary microbiology at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan said that we are in the peak season for ticks. Ticks are not just in grassy rural areas but also in urban areas. In Saskatchewan, we have three different kinds of ticks. Dr. Jenkins said the ticks we are seeing are typically our homegrown ticks called the American Dog tick, which make up for 96 per cent of the ticks that we hear about on people or pets. to read the full article visit MBCradio.com

The facility is a place of safety, healing, and hope for women, children, and families affected by domestic violence and crisis situations. MBC news talked with Sherry Bates, the executive director of the new women's shelter about the new facility.

May 26, 2026 MBC News Host: Danielle Dufour On June 2nd the Kitchener Community school in Regina will be having a ribbon skirt fashion show for community members and student families to see the student’s creations. “The Barbies are going to be walking down the red carpet,” said Brittany Johns. Brittany Johns, from Pasqua First Nations, is the Grade 5-6 teacher who oversaw the Barbie ribbon skirt project. “We wanted to incorporate First Nations culture, Metis culture, we wanted to incorporate representation in the classroom, and we wanted to teach them life skills,” said Johns. The school has a significant number of Indigenous students. “There’s two parts in my role, both engagement and attendance,” said Alison Kimbley the Indigenous Advocate at Kitchener school in Regina. “I firmly believe that for attendance to happen, students need to be meaningfully engaged.” To kick off the project, the school knowledge keeper kohkum Diane came and spoke to the students. May 21, 2026 MBC News Host: Danielle Dufour The HIRE (Helping individuals reintegrate effectively)  program is changing the lives of young individuals who were once entangled in addictions, gangs, and correctional facilities. “The age group is focused on ages 13 to 24 and primarily for Indigenous youth,” said Aaron Desjarlais the program manager.  “We take guys coming from different walks of life … we have guys coming out of corrections, we have guys that are just looking for what to do moving forward in their lives,” said Robert Leyte, the employment supervisor for the HIRE program. “We go to the shop and make some really cool stuff and sell it on our Facebook page to continue funding our program.” Colby Worm, from Kawacatoose First Nation, was a client of the HIRE program. May 14, 2026 MBC News Host: Amber Bear Community members and special dignitaries gathered along the riverbank at the monuments in Prince Albert this week for the annual Moose Hide Campaign event, raising awareness about gender-based violence and the need for healing, reconciliation, and community support. The event began at the Prince Albert Grand Council monuments and featured guest speakers including PAGC Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte, City of Prince Albert Mayor Bill Powalinsky, and community advocates. Despite rainy weather, organizers said many people still came out to show support for the campaign and to hear the message the presenters shared. Chelsea Morin, organizer with the Moose Hide Campaign event in Prince Albert, said the movement focuses on ending violence against women and children. May 15, 2026 MBC News Host: Danielle Dufour Jeff Cappo opened the ceremony by welcoming the crowd to the 8th annual Hearts in the Park event in Regina yesterday sponsored by the Circle Project, Family Service Regina and the Regina Police Service (RPS). “We are gathering here today during the victim and survivors of crime week to honor those who have felt the impacts of domestic violence in our communities,” said Cappo. The event offered attendees the opportunity to remember those affected by violence and to bring awareness of the topic by placing a heart in the park on their behalf. May 12, 2026  MBC News Host: Danielle Dufour Jeremiah Manitopyes, better known by his stage name Drezus, is a Plains Cree rapper and activist and member of the Muskowekwan First Nation. He credits the drums for saving his life and taking him out of the darkness. His mom moved the family to Calgary where Drezus was exposed to more international influences. This gave him a different outlook and understanding of the world. “Those kids growing up from different races, backgrounds, really helped shape who I am today and help me navigate the road that I’m on now,” said Drezus. May 14, 2026 MBC News Host: Danielle Dufour According to the Government of Saskatchewan the bear attack on May 8th west of Wollaston Lake that led to the death of a 27-year-old man, is in the early stages of an investigation by the Conservation Officer Service’s Wildlife Human Attack Response Team, RCMP and the Coroner’s Service. This is the fourth fatal bear attack in Saskatchewan history. “I wouldn’t say black bears are really aggressive,” said Elizabeth O’Hara, an Ecologist and black bear Biologist with the Ministry of Environment. “They’re typically afraid of humans, so having any aggressive interactions with black bears is very uncommon.” O’Hara’s job is to guide the management of black bears in the province, using the best available scientific, social and economic information. to read the full article visit MBCradio.com

May 6, 2026 MBC Host: Danielle Dufour There is no prejudice when it comes to human trafficking, it can happen to anyone. Sex trafficking is when someone is controlled, threated or manipulated into exchanging sexual services for money while being controlled by a trafficker. This manipulation and control can occur online or in person, often where the predator targets a person by gaining their trust and exploits the person’s physical or emotional vulnerabilities, and either coerces or forces them into selling sex. In Canada, 50 per cent of trafficker’s victims are Indigenous, despite making up only four per cent of the total population. Support for victims in Saskatchewan who have been sexually exploited or human trafficked can be found through Hope Restored Canada, a non-profit organization in Saskatoon. At one time the focus was on how to rescue these individuals, but rescue is a moment not a solution. “How we respond, we support individuals where they are,” said Kendra Mazer the Executive Director of Hope Restored. “No referral is required.” Continue reading the full article at MBCradio.com
