A veteran pilot managed to escape uninjured after part of his propeller snapped off mid-flight.

Evan Wheeler was flying his two-seater Murphy Rebel bush plane back to Whitianga after a barbecue over the weekend, when he suddenly noticed something was wrong.

Wheeler said he thought he'd blown a piston or dropped a valve, but it turned out to be something else.

"The engine almost stopped, I pulled it back up again and I knew the engine was okay, so then you just sort of get into the mode of - where am I going to land?"

The election is set to take place this weekend, and Labour's Kieran McAnulty is hoping to reach out to prospective voters ahead of the Saturday deadline.

The election is still quite close, and Labour's hoping to grow voting numbers through campaign events, social media and doorknocking.

Campaign chair Kieran McAnulty says the party's still going hard, and they're hoping to reach out to Kiwis.

"I'm getting the sense that people are getting pretty sick of the campaigning and pretty sick of the bickering, the noise and the counterclaims and all that sort of stuff. And actually, we need to just have a normal conversation."
