The bill seeking to remove Good Friday and Easter Sunday as restricted trading days has been voted down.
Politicians voted against it 74 to 49, in a conscience vote.
ACT MP Cameron Luxton says he did what he could to represent Kiwis who want freedom on how they spend Easter.
