Welcome to Marketing School, the only podcast that provides daily top level marketing tips and strategies from entrepreneurs that practice what they preach and live what they teach. Let's start leveling up your marketing knowledge with your instructors, Neil Patel and Eric Sue. All Right, guys, before we start, we got a special message from our sponsor. If you want to rank higher on Google, you gotta look at your page speed time. The faster website loads, the better off you are with Google's Core Vital update. That makes it super super important to optimize your site for low time. And one easy way to do it is use the host that Eric and I use, dream Hosts. So just go to dream host or google it, find it, check it out, and it's a great way to improve your low time. All right, today we're going to talk about why Google is reranking your old content. But first and foremost, what do we mean by that? Neil, So with your old comment, you know what you'll find is you write content you may rank at the top, rank at the bottom, and overtime it fluctuates. It can go up, it can go down. Just because your content's a year old or one day old. It doesn't mean that it's going to stay in the current position that is ranking. Yeah. So, I mean in some cases, back in the day, people will talk about query deserves freshness, right, So if it's something like a let's say, if the annual festival, well the ones that have the most updates for the latest year. That makes a lot of sense, right, So there's things that are time bound and where Google might know that, hey, like this deserves to be refreshed. Now, in some cases you might have an evergreen piece of content, right, But even in that case, like a biography on Abraham Lincoln, Wikipedia, I believe that ranks number one for it. But the writers whoever's adding to it, they're constantly pumping up more and more content that post that page itself to Abraham Lincoln one back in the day, because I looked at this page. Used to be about three thousand words when it first started. Now it's up to twenty twenty five thousand words or so, and it keeps getting longer. Yeah, you know, like there's nothing new about Abraham Lincoln that really comes out, but it just keeps getting longer. Oh wait, that's a big reason why Wikipedia ranks so well for a lot of things. So, yeah, you just got to keep things updated and fresh. And what you'll find is, even if you don't update the text, sometimes your images are outdated, or sometimes the videos are outdated, or sometimes the usability of the page isn't as great, or sometimes it just loads too slow. So fixing all these things with your older pages, your older content, can really give it life and make it rank better. Yeah. In the last episode, we talked about how the major factor moving forward is the user experience, right, and that's all encompassing how good your content is, how fast your site is, time on page, You know all these different things, right, So if you think about it, are you creating the best experience possible? Part of user experience is also making sure that your content is updated, because if it's not, then your metrics aren't going to reflect that, right. So I think thinking in terms of how Google is thinking and how an algorithm or how a spider might be thinking would be helpful to you, Neil. Yeah, and last but not least, if your rankings drop on your old content pages, look at the keywords that it's dropped. And you can see this in Google Tools. Go search for those keywords on Google. Look at all the results that are above you, or if there's too many above you, just look at the ones that are in the top three, top ten if you have extra time, and see what they're doing that you're not, and that'll give you ideas on how to update and make yours better.
