Welcome to Marketing School, the only podcast that provides daily top level marketing tips and strategies from entrepreneurs that practice what they preach and live what they teach. Let's start leveling up your marketing knowledge with your instructors, Neil Patel and Eric Sue. All right, guys, before we start, we got a special message from our sponsor. If you want to rank higher on Google, you got to look at your page speed time. The faster website loads, the better off you are with Google's Core Vital update. That makes it super super important to optimize your site for low time. And one easy way to do it is use the host that Eric and I use, dream Hosts. So just go to dream host or Google it, find it, check it out, and it's a great way to improve your low time. They we are going to talk about how to release a new redesign without affecting your traffic. Yeah. So the big thing is, and this one's not too long of an episode because you don't know as you have to do much to get a redesigned up and not affect your traffic. There's two big things. One think about your structure on how you're linking your pages together. Adjusting your structure. Like Eric had like related articles in his blog and we needed to redesign his traffic drop because they remove that section so the crossinking wasn't there as much. So that's example of structure. The second is make sure your new website loads just as fast, if not faster, because people love speed. And then the third thing is is be careful of the keywords that you're using within your headings, your title tags, your meta tags, and just try to keep that consistent when you're releasing your new design as well as like URL structures, and you should be fine overall. And yes there's a lot of little stuff, but those are the main ones. Like URL structures, make sure it loads fast, your internal links, your meta tags, and not trying to change up the key words, and you should be good overall with your redesign. And also just make sure that the site is compatible with different types of browser windows and is responsive and you should be able to maintain most of your traffic. Yeah, I'd like to think about doing a redesign in terms of Charlie Munger's inversion exercise. So here's what not to do when you're doing a redesign. So Neil talked about, you know, for us, I've seen this with maybe clients in the past too, where they make sweeping changes without considering where all the key links are, the navigation, you know, all the site structure, all those things matter, and so you know, what you do typically to help counteract that is you can basically use screaming Frog, which will crawl your entire website and look at you know, kind of look at what's going to what. Also using a tool to uber Suggest for example, you can see what the core pages are and where the top links are and where the traffic is going. Also layering that on with Google analy likes as well. But you have to get the foundation right because you're basically building, you're remodeling your home, right, but you got to make sure the foundation is right. You can't just put it on brand new foundation. You have to build on top of it. So most people don't look at it that way. And then you know, other than that, I mean, when you think about, like we're actually with a client right now, I heard this, They're like, oh, yeah, you know, should we just like completely change our navigation and just remove all the links in the footer all these things? You know, should we just remove all our blog posts. Da da da da. No, you can't do that because at the end of the day, you have to think like a search engine. Search engines are crawling your entire website. They're looking at what's connected to what, and you know, oftentimes we've talked about this in the past, but in terms of consolidating, you know, upgrading your content, combining your content, those are all considerations to actually think about when you're doing a redesign too. So you know, I think the worst inversion thing if you want to kill your website is to just do it without thinking about SEO and do it without planning because it doesn't matter. Like the people that we're talking to, like if you're a product designer or if you know you're like, you know, I don't have time for SEO. Well, that's a sure way to tank your traffic.
